The Program in Judaic Studies at Brown University is inviting applications for a Visiting Professorship in Israel Studies in the 2024-2025 academic year.  Appointments are possible for one or two semesters.  The purpose of the visiting professorship is to enhance academic discourse on the study of Israel at Brown.  As a scholar in Israel Studies, the visiting professor would teach one undergraduate course per semester, be engaged in the intellectual life of the Program in Judaic Studies and the University at large, by making presentations on campus to faculty seminars in relevant academic unit and being available to consult with undergraduate or graduate students. The visiting professor would also be expected to organize a public event in the field of Israel Studies that would feature scholars in this field from outside of Brown, such as a lecture, a panel discussion, or a symposium. The professorship provides a salary, an optional medical insurance package, a research fund, funds to support the public event in the field of Israel Studies, and administrative assistance.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences and be committed to Israel Studies as a central focus of scholarship.  Applications must be either (1) a foreign national who is eligible to obtain a J-1 visa or (2) a U.S. citizen or resident. Candidates should be fluent in Hebrew and English, have experience teaching, have experience in organizing public academic events, be actively engaged in the academic study of Israel, and have the ability to convey research effectively to the general public. 

The Program in Judaic Studies seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, viewpoints, and ways of knowing and learning.  The Program is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Applications should include: (1) a cover letter describing your research, teaching, accomplishments, and proposed length of stay (one or two semesters and preference of semester if coming for one semester); (2) a current C.V.; (3) a list of three professional references; and (4) brief descriptions of at least two courses that you would like to teach as a visiting professor.  The position is not open to junior faculty.

Reading of applications will begin on May 1, 2024 and will continue through May 15, 2024.
