Visiting Lecturer in Film (English Department)

The Film and Media Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications for a non-tenure stream visiting lecturer teaching position for the 2024-2025 Academic Year. Position appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. It is a full-time position outside the tenure stream teaching three courses per term and does not include summer teaching. Applicants must have completed all requirements for their terminal degree by Sept. 1, 2024.
The University of Pittsburgh Film and Media Studies program invites applications to join an active and innovative program that brings together critical studies, film production, and broadcasting through an interdisciplinary program. Colleagues will teach a mixture of first-year composition courses themed to film, introductory general education courses, and a possible elective in the major and/or minor. Candidates must be able to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary program, direct undergraduate research projects, organize events and student colloquia and participate in collective governance. The teaching load includes composition and writing-intensive courses with the expectation of service.
The minimum basic qualification is an advanced degree (P.h.D.) in English or a related field. Applicants must demonstrate interest and proficiency in teaching film and media from an interdisciplinary and intersectional critical studies perspective. The successful candidate will be an innovative teacher with possible specializations in film, television, and media industries, genre, screen technologies, or digital cultures. Film and Media Studies values innovative teaching approaches that engage with digital media, the creative industries, and production culture in classrooms. Applicants should show how their teaching or service demonstrates a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Applicants will be judged on the basis of teaching excellence, experience with curricular supervision and design, and departmental teaching needs. The selection committee consists of the four program directors, the four directors of undergraduate studies, the Chair, and the director of the Writing Institute. When this committee evaluates applications, they will do so in the spirit and norms captured by the department’s statement on the evaluation of teaching .
