The Mount Holyoke College Department of Sociology and Anthropology seeks a full-time visiting lecturer, with a specialization in political and/or legal anthropology, for a one-year appointment beginning July 1, 2024. The position entails a 2/3 teaching load, with two courses expected in the Fall semester and three in the Spring. Across the academic year, the successful candidate will teach our Introduction to Cultural Anthropology as well as intermediate and seminar courses on topics in political/legal anthropology. We are open to any and all geographical or topical specializations within political/legal anthropology. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. or ABD status in anthropology. The successful candidate should also have a strong undergraduate teaching record that demonstrates a high capacity for mentoring students broadly diverse with respect to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, national, sexual orientation, and religion.
The Anthropology program at Mount Holyoke is a vibrant collective of five tenure-line faculty, a full-time continuing lecturer, and a department coordinator. We graduate 15-20 anthropology majors per year. While Anthropology shares a departmental unit with Sociology, the faculty, programs, and curricula are distinct. Mount Holyoke faculty also benefit by the broader research and teaching community of the Five College Consortium.
Please submit: (1) a cover letter addressing your interest in Mount Holyoke; (2) a CV; (3) a teaching philosophy; and (4) a statement on mentoring a diverse student body. Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference submitted on their behalf. While research production is not a requirement of this position, we welcome a brief description of how research shapes your teaching in the cover letter.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning February 19, 2024.
Please contact Department Chair Matt Watson ([email protected] ) with any questions.
