Visiting Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Mathematics:  The Marine and Environmental Sciences Program at Alaska Pacific University (APU) invites applications for a full-time visiting faculty position with rank depending on educational preparation and experience. Candidates should have experience in statistical analysis, undergraduate mathematics, and quantitative ecology with documented experience teaching at the university level. Success in research and graduate student mentorship is preferred. Indigenous candidates are encouraged to apply.

THE PROGRAM AREAS: The Marine and Environmental Sciences Program area offers a Bachelor of Science with an integrated core curriculum and a broad range of concentrations which include Marine Biology, Earth & Climate Science, Ecology, Fisheries Ecology and Aquarium & Husbandry Science. The area also offers minors in Environmental Policy, Marine & Environmental Science and Mathematics. The MES program also offers degrees in Environmental Public Health. At the graduate level, the Masters of Science in Environmental Science is for students seeking deeper understanding of the role that field-based science plays in determining economic and political policies that shape northern regions. The Marine and Environmental Science area is part of the Institute of Culture and Environment, which also includes Outdoor Studies, Education, Environmental Public Health and Liberal Studies.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The contract carries a 9-month teaching load of 24 credit hours for the 2024 – 2025 academic year. Ideal candidates should have expertise and teaching experience in the following areas: Data exploration and management; Bayesian and frequentist statistics; modelling; programming (e.g., R, Python, etc.); study design; Undergraduate Mathematics/Algebra and Population, Community, Landscape, or Ecosystem Ecology in animals and/or plants. Responsibilities in addition to teaching include serving on University committees, undergraduate advising, collaborating with the department to develop and enhance current programs, providing general statistical and study design support to students and faculty colleagues, and opportunities for research and related undergraduate and graduate project supervision.

RANK AND SALARY:  Salary and rank are dependent upon educational preparation and experience, and salary is proscribed by a university-wide salary range.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requirements for the position include an earned PhD in Quantitative Ecology, Ecology, Statistics, Mathematics, Biology, or a closely related discipline by July 1, 2024 and demonstrated success in undergraduate experiential education and student mentorship. The ideal candidate will be able to teach in two or more of the stated curricular areas, but otherwise qualified candidates who can teach in one discipline will also be considered.
