Visiting Assistant Professor of Music – Jazz Drums and Percussion

The University of Iowa School of Music is now accepting applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music – Jazz Drums and Percussion. This is a full-time position renewable for up to 3-years.

UI Jazz Studies is a dynamic and forward-thinking area with teaching colleagues well-adjusted in both cultivating academic understanding and the practical application of performance skills in real-world scenarios. Embracing a holistic approach to jazz pedagogy, the area embodies the philosophy that jazz is part of a broad musical continuum that includes the related (yet often excluded) popular styles germane to African American music culture. In addition to ensembles typical to jazz studies curricula (2 big bands, 4-5 combos), UI jazz studies proudly offers a Black Pop Music Ensemble – one of very few in the nation. Through comprehensive cultural/musical understanding and pedagogy rooted in practical application of learned skills beyond the academy, UI jazz studies is positioned to become a program of distinction among its Big 10, Research I peer institutions. The jazz area currently offers BM, BA, and MA degree options with a secondary emphasis available for DMA students. Our MA program also touts a CD Portfolio Project option for graduate students - which accepts a recorded album in lieu of a written master’s thesis.

Duties: We seek a colleague with experience teaching a variety of courses in a traditional jazz curriculum. In addition to teaching applied drum set and percussion lessons in jazz/Latin/various Black popular music styles, a successful candidate may be asked to teach courses in the following: jazz rhythm studies (for all instruments), large and small jazz ensemble direction, Jazz history, survey courses in music atypical in the academy (i.e. hip hop, R&B, Neo-Soul). Experience with applicable technology (i.e. sequencing, loopers and drum machines) preferred, but not required.

Start Date: August 21, 2024
