Position Summary:
The Department of Geography and the Environment at Villanova University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor position in Sustainability starting in August 2024. The Department of Geography and the Environment serves as a multidisciplinary academic unit linking the social and natural sciences within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and across the curriculum at Villanova University. The Department of Geography and the Environment offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Environmental Science and B.A. degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies. The Department also offers key courses in the cross-College Sustainability Studies Minor. The Department’s overarching objective is to integrate the disciplines of geography and environmental science in seeking to understand the spatial patterns of human systems and landscapes, environmental processes, and the effects of people on the environment. We foster an atmosphere of open dialogue and incorporate innovative approaches in the classroom, creative laboratory and field experiences, and student-centered instruction to ensure a high quality of learning and teaching. Our goal is to develop students and faculty who engage in and are dedicated to critical thinking, open-ended problem solving, and a lifetime of learning. Our new colleague should have experience in or the potential for building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
We seek an Environmental Social Scientist for a one-year visiting position focused on teaching courses in sustainability. Our new colleague will teach the required Introduction to Sustainability Studies course for the cross-College Sustainability Studies Minor and an Environmental Sustainability lecture and laboratory course for undergraduate non-science majors in the fall 2024 semester. Courses in the spring 2025 semester will include the Introduction to Sustainability Studies course and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching will contribute to the Department’s commitment to diversity and academic excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of teaching effectiveness.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities include lecture and laboratory courses at the undergraduate and possibly graduate levels. Teaching responsibilities are 24 contact hours per year typically divided into a 4/4 teaching load.
Minimum Qualifications:
A graduate degree (M.S., M.A., or Ph.D.; ABD will be considered) in environmental studies, environmental science, sustainability science, or a related discipline is required. Broad training in environmental studies is expected.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching experience is preferred.
