The Department of Philosophy at UWM offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide students with an understanding of historical and contemporary work in theoretical and practical philosophy at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Our department has an internationally recognized terminal MA program that regularly places students in top PhD programs.
Job Summary
The Department of Philosophy at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is seeking to make a one-year appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor during the 2024/2025 academic year. Candidates for this position should specialize or have competence in some area of broadly normative/practical philosophy. The person filling this position will teach three courses each semester (fall and spring). Teaching responsibilities include both graduate-level courses in our terminal MA program, upper-level undergraduate courses for our majors, and introductory courses for non-majors. The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach the following courses in the fall semester of 2024:
  • Either Philos 101: Introduction to Philosophy (online) or Philos 241: Introductory Ethics (online). These are each lower-level undergraduate courses.
  • Philos 355/355G: Political Philosophy (online). This is an upper-level undergraduate course that has a graduate component should any graduate students choose to enroll.
  • Philos 941: Seminar in Ethics and Social and Political Philosophy (face-to-face). This is a graduate-level seminar. The topic is to be determined by the instructor.

Teaching assignments for the spring semester of 2025 will be similar to the fall semester.
The teaching responsibilities for this position are hybrid. The person filling this position is expected to be in or commute to the Milwaukee area to fulfill face-to-face teaching responsibilities during the 2024/2025 academic year.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A PhD in philosophy or expected completion of a PhD in philosophy by August 2024
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of strong scholarly research potential
  • Evidence of ability to teach graduate-level courses in broadly normative areas of philosophy
  • Evidence of ability to teach ethics and political philosophy at the introductory and advanced undergraduate levels
Target Salary Range $52,000/academic year.
