Position Overview

The Department of Design at The Ohio State University is excited to invite individuals to apply for a Visiting Assistant Professor position. We are in search of dynamic educators in visual communication design, who are deeply grounded in core principles but also enthusiastic about incorporating emerging technologies and current topics in Design. The ideal candidate will adeptly weave these aspects together, enriching our curriculum with a robust blend of essential skills and a progressive teaching philosophy for visual communication design.

The position is a one-year contract with the possibility of renewal for up to three years.

Performance Objectives

• Teach undergraduate and graduate studio and lecture courses.

• Engage in innovative teaching and curriculum development.

• Provide career advising and mentorship to students.

• Contribute to the school, college, university, and community through service.

• Participate actively in relevant professional organizations.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Terminal degree (MFA, MDes, PhD) in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Motion and Animation Design, Interaction Design, or related fields.

• Proficiency in articulating the fundamental principles of graphic design, including typography, imagery, and visual composition. This involves practical application, creation, and critical analysis, with the capability to work and instruct across various media.

• Teaching experience/graduate teaching experience.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active design practice and creative research agenda.

• Will have expertise and professional industry experience in one or more of the following areas: brand identity, typography, information design, design for good, human-centered design, interaction design, UI/UX, system design, web/app design, visual narrative, motion graphics, 2D/3D animation, computational/generative graphics, and AI-enabled design strategies and applications.

Department Information

The Department of Design  offers three undergraduate majors (BSD Industrial Design, BSD Interior Design, and BSD Visual Communication Design), a Design Thinking minor, and two tracks of graduate study (MFA Design Research & Development, MFA Digital Animation & Interactive Media). Our undergraduate program features a year of Design Foundations followed by competitive major acceptance for small cohorts of 18-20 students, and an emphasis on research and cross-major collaboration. Our three-year graduate program admits 8-12 MFA students annually, the majority of which are fully funded. The diversity of our design faculty’s expertise and the value we place on collegiality and collaboration are points of departmental pride
