Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Lewiston, MAINE
Deadline: 23 Feb 2024

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Bates College, a private, highly selective liberal arts college in Maine, invites applications for three one-year Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) positions to begin August 1, 2024. Each position carries a five-course annual teaching load. Curricular needs in the department include General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Biochemistry (course descriptions found here .) Candidates with expertise in one or more of those areas are encouraged to apply.

Other opportunities available include supervising senior thesis students and professional development programing offered by the college. Because the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department has three open VAP positions, we welcome dual-career applicants.

Bates and the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department  are committed to enhancing equity and inclusiveness of the campus and the curriculum. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching as well as demonstrated success or potential for working with underrepresented, first generation, and marginalized student populations. The search committee expects applicants to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas and describe how their teaching can further this goal. As well, the department expects to support the success of visiting professors through mentorship and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications: Candidates must complete a Ph.D. before August 2024.

Applications should include:

  • a cover letter describing the applicant’s interest in teaching at a small four-year liberal arts college and which courses listed above you are prepared to teach.
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a teaching statement which addresses the applicant’s preparation to teach general chemistry, biochemistry, and/or inorganic chemistry including labs. The statement should also describe the applicant’s experience with, and interest in, applying inclusive pedagogy;
  • two or three letters of recommendation, at least one of which discusses the applicant's teaching experience and preparation.
  • Applications will be reviewed starting Monday, February 12, 2024, and continue until the position is filled. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
