Job Description

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics in the College of Science invites applications for two (2) Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics for the 2022-2023 academic year. This is a 9-month, non-tenure track, one-year appointment. We are looking for people who are committed to fostering teaching excellence and student development in a program that values creativity, collaboration, learner-centered pedagogy, and diversity. The new faculty members will join a collaborative group of 22 mathematics and statistics faculty who serve the entire campus community. The department currently offers degrees in BS Mathematics, MS in Mathematics, and MS in Statistics.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidates will teach multiple courses in undergraduate mathematics, statistics, and developmental math courses, participate in the ongoing development of such courses, and take a leadership role in common assessment efforts, TSI, and Summer Bridge Program. The workload for Math Instructors in the department is teaching five three-hour courses per semester, and professional service over 9 months. No expectations for research is required.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics in the College of Science strives to educate students at the University so that they are prepared to use mathematics intelligently in their chosen fields of study and to understand mathematics as it affects their lives and participation in public affairs. The Mathematics Program provides its majors and graduate students with preparation for careers in education, science, and commerce, as well as providing a solid foundation for further study in mathematics. We also strive to serve our community by providing expertise to local schools, industry and business.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses, or the potential for effective teaching of such courses.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in performing professional service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Breadth and depth of mathematical knowledge.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to and preparation for excellence in teaching upper-level undergraduate mathematics courses.

  • Ability to work with diverse student populations at the college level.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • One or more years of teaching Developmental Math courses

  • Experience with TSI and Summer Bridge Program
