The English Department at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications for a non-tenure stream Visiting Assistant Professor teaching position in the Writing Program, to begin the fall semester of 2024. Position appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. It is a full-time position outside the tenure stream teaching 2 courses per term and does not include summer teaching.

The Writing Program is specifically interested in candidates who can teach multi-genre classes (poetry/fiction/nonfiction), as well as introductory and intermediate classes in fiction, poetry, and/or nonfiction. Candidates must also have experience in teaching composition classes.

Applicants must hold an MFA degree in Creative Writing. Preferred qualifications include a record of superior academic teaching and professional experience; demonstrated ability to develop curriculum within broadly defined learning objectives; excellent communication skills; and experience mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, including students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities.

Teaching Load:  2/2 plus committee or supervisory assignment.

  • A teaching portfolio that includes a teaching statement, sample syllabi, and student surveys.
