Job Description


The Department of Religion and Culture (RLCL) at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a Visiting Assistant Professorship in Judaic Studies (JUD). The initial appointment is for one year but is eligible for reappointment for two more years, subject to funding availability and departmental approval. Research specialization is open but preference will be given to candidates whose work broadly intersects with other research strengths within the department. (Please see the faculty list.) The successful candidate will be expected to teach 3 courses per semester; these will include an introductory course on Jewish History and Culture, a course on the Holocaust, and another course related to the successful candidate’s specialization. Applications should include evidence of teaching experience with accomplishment in teaching and mentoring underrepresented and underserved students, and preference will be given to applications demonstrating teaching excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will be encouraged to arrange special events with funding provided by the endowments in Judaic Studies, and to contribute to the intellectual life of the department, the university, and/or the local community. Ph.D. in Judaic studies or a closely related field, or evidence of completion by August 2024 is required.


Required Qualifications


  • PhD in Judaic Studies or closely related field, or evidence of PhD completion by August 2024
  • College-level teaching experience, including ability to teach courses on Jewish history and culture, as well as on the Holocaust
  • Strong research agenda in Judaic Studies.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Record of teaching excellence in higher education, with accomplishment in teaching and mentoring underrepresented and underserved students
  • Breadth and versatility in teaching Judaic Studies courses
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit students to Judaic Studies courses
  • Alignment between research agenda and the intellectual interests of the faculty in the Department of Religion and Culture
  • Experience with student event planning
