VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH 

 

The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications from qualified candidates for a one-year visiting position in ethnomusicology at the assistant professor level for the 2024-2025 academic year. We seek a highly motivated individual with scholarly promise, a strong research agenda, and demonstrated excellence in teaching. The area of specialization is open, though preference will be given to candidates whose interdisciplinary interests complement those of our current faculty. 

The person in this position will teach two courses each semester, which will include a graduate seminar in ethnomusicology and three other undergraduate music courses based on areas of interest and departmental needs. The position will involve participation in the life of the department and the person will need to demonstrate ability to work effectively and collegially with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a Ph.D. or will complete a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology or a related field with an ethnomusicological focus by June 2024.

The Department of Music offers Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in ethnomusicology, musicology, jazz studies, and composition and theory as well as a B.A. in music. The graduate program provides students with instruction in the theories, methods, and critical theories of each of the subdisciplines. The department offers an undergraduate track in global and popular music and supports a robust world music performance program that features gamelan, African music and dance, Afro-pop, and bluegrass. Through this appointment, the Department seeks to reinforce and expand relationships across university departments, programs, and scholarly centers.

Duties:                  Teach undergraduate courses and a graduate seminar; conduct research and publish; participate actively in the profession; share in administrative responsibilities.
