Job Summary

Visiting Assistant Professor of Acting; Non-tenure track, One academic year contract with possibility of one-year renewal. Start date August 12, 2024. 


Responsibilities

The Department of Theatre at Purdue University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Acting with experience in the professional entertainment industry, and an approach to actor training that balances rigor with wellness, sustainability, and consent-based practices. The successful candidate will be able to create curriculum for a variety of courses, and teach 4 classes per semester, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, that include voice and movement fundamentals, scene study, and two or more of the following areas: on-camera; Shakespeare; voice-over; book narration; business of acting; advanced actor movement; dialects; advanced voice; audition techniques. 


The position includes directing and other production support (course release offered), mentoring and advising students, committee and service assignments, and opportunities to help shape policy and practices during a period of exciting transition. 


Qualifications

Required qualifications include a MFA in Acting or related discipline; recent professional acting experience in one or more of the following areas: television, film, live performance, video games, voice-over, audio narration, or commercials; and experience teaching acting and acting disciplines at the university, college, or professional studio level.

 

Candidates must have the ability to work in the U.S. without immigration sponsorship from Purdue University.


Department

The Department of Theatre seeks to cultivate maker-citizens with a strong sense of identity and agency, who have the tools to navigate the entertainment industry as well as create their own artistic work. We offer a BA degree, which has an interdisciplinary, liberal arts focus, and MFA degrees in acting, costume design, sound design, set design, lighting design and technical direction. We are one of five academic units (including Art & Design, Dance, Film Video, and Music) in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. 


The Department of Theatre has 130 undergraduate theatre students (majors/concentrations/certificates/minors), 17 graduate students, 10 faculty, and 5 staff. We are housed in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts on the West Lafayette, IN campus, and are closely affiliated with the innovative Fusion Studio for Entertainment and Engineering, a university center focused on developing and disseminating the best teaching and learning practices at the intersection of engineering and the entertainment industry.
