AFTL (Analytical Forensic Testing Laboratory) under the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of Illinois at Chicago is looking for two Visiting Analytical Forensic Toxicology Specialists. 

Under minimal supervision, perform routine to semi-complex toxicological analysis to identify and
quantify administrative/intoxicating compounds in biological samples. Review, communicate and
apply changes in federal, national and state toxicological analysis practices and protocols in the lab to
fulfill UIC contractual agreements with law enforcement agencies and submitting agencies.



Toxicological Analysis

  • Accept, verify, and store specimens protecting specimen integrity as well as chain of custody to maintain specimen viability as legal evidence.
  • Perform isolation (extraction) of administrative/intoxicating compounds or controlled substances from biological samples and identify compounds using GC-MS, LCMS/MS, and HS-GC-FID/MS. Qualitatively or quantitatively identify and measure the presence of compounds of interest in biological samples to generate reliable, reproducible results and conclusions.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Review federal, state, and/ or local regulations concerning the chain of evidence, target substance testing protocol, and storage of specimens to update lab methods to ensure compliance with ISO 17025:2017 and/or RMTC lab accreditation protocols and procedures as appropriate.

Documentation/Support for Court Cases (or administrative hearings)

  • Operate computer-controlled instruments using data acquisition modalities and special software to record results and data, and generate reports. Interpret basic testresults.
  • Prepare case files to document findings and submit reports for review prior to submission to law enforcement and submitting agencies.
  • Provide expert testimony as requested for criminal or civil court proceedings or administrative hearings. Submit case files in response to subpoenas or as requested.
  • Provide technical explanations to agencies and attorneys in support of the analytical work performed in the laboratory.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.



BS degree (MS preferred) in chemistry, biochemistry, or other appropriately related field plus a minimum of one year's experience in an analytical laboratory, with experience or training in forensic laboratory recordkeeping requirement, ISO 17025 accreditation and expert witness testimony.

Ability to pass exam for and maintain Professional Membership status in the Association of Official Racing Chemists (AORC) upon accepting the job offer.

Knowledge of basic laboratory extraction/ sampling techniques, and spectrometry instrumentation. Knowledge of specimen handling procedures in a forensic toxicology laboratory setting. 

Intermediate skills using general office equipment, Microsoft suite of office products (e.g. Word, Excel,
Outlook). Strong verbal and written communication skills to maintain effective working relations with
departments, employees and managers at all levels of the internal organization, as well as external
constituencies (clients and other state entities).
