JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are seeking an entry-level to early-career Virtual Reality Engineer to join our Visualization Technology Department in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. Candidates should have an interest in 3D visualization, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR). Position can be located in State College, PA or Reston, VA.
The position will entail XR system design and deployment, integration of disparate content sources, and XR application development to support novel XR use-cases. Leveraging Virtual Reality content development, game design, and/or related experience, the candidate will integrate solutions with an internally-developed, Unity3D-based synthetic environment framework that is being applied to multiple sponsored projects across domains. These solutions are being deployed to a number of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) platforms including:
- Oculus Rift
- HTC Vive
- Valve Index
- Magic Leap
- HoloLens/HoloLens2
- CAVE immersive displays.
You will...
- Designs and develops components of industry-related engineering systems, applying knowledge of complex principles, theories, concepts, tools and techniques to the design challenges.
- Create 3D experiences built for either VR, AR, Mobile, or web that improve business workflows or communicate complex concepts
- Demonstrate and define immersive interaction standards
- Develop new processes for visualizing content using immersive technology
- Design experiences, interactions, and applications that support effective collaboration within Immersive environments
- Create tool workflows or visual communication methods that illustrate and document immersive concepts
- Automation and development of techniques to enable scalable delivery of immersive content to geographically diverse users
This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Level 1 typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Professional Engineer license accepted in lieu of Bachelor's degree) or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.
Experience in the following is required:
Experience/exposure to Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) platforms
A background in software engineering, systems engineering, human computer interfaces or visualization technologies
Experience in object-oriented programming languages
Experience in the following is preferred:
- Virtual Reality content development, game design, and/or related software experience
- Multi-player Unity3D application development
- Unreal application development
- 3D modeling concepts with Autodesk 3DSMax, Maya, or Blender
- Cloud deployment (AWS/Azure)
- Photogrammetry and 3D model processing
- Computer-aided Design (CAD) modeling
- Geospatial and GIS tool suites
- Systems engineering
