Job Summary

SECTON EDITOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
While varying slightly within each department, the News, Sports and Entertainment Editors have similar responsibilities. In addition to hiring and training reporters, these editors must also assign, read, and edit all stories with help from their assistant editors (if applicable). They are frequently in contact with their reporters and fellow subeditors. Content may be influenced or changed by the Editor in Chief.
News, Sports and Features Editors are responsible for hiring, training and managing their staff of reporters made up of interns and volunteers.
News, Sports and Features Editors work in concert with the other content editors to develop a strong and vibrant visual report. They regularly collaborate with the Photo Editors, the Art Director and the Editor in Chief.
In addition to hiring and training reporters, editors must also assign, read, and edit all stories. They are frequently in contact with their reporters and fellow subeditors. Content may be influenced or changed by the Editor in Chief.
News, Sports and Features Editors are required to meet weekly with their respective staff members for planning and review purposes. They should provide constructive feedback to their staff members and they should encourage staff members to be aware of the Editor in Chief and General Manager’s critiques.
News, Sports and Features Editors will work and collaborate directly with the Editor in Chief in the day-to-day management and flow of content for Videtteonline.com. The Editors will be required to become proficient in the web content management system (TownNews), the Adobe Creative Suite software (primarily InDesign and Photoshop.
The positions require about 17 hours per week.
Assistant section editors (when applicable) will serve as the primary reporter for each section as well as helping the News, Sports and Features reporters with their duties as assigned.

PHOTO EDITOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
They are responsible for hiring, training and managing their staff of photographer and videographer interns and volunteers.
The Photo Editors work in concert with the other content editors to develop a strong and vibrant visual report.
Photo Editors are required to meet weekly with their staff members for planning and review purposes. They should provide constructive feedback to their staff members and they should encourage staff members to be aware of the General Manager’s weekly critiques.
Photo Editors are required to push aggressively for a robust digital visual report, which, among other things, is to include regular photo galleries for Videtteonline.com and to contribute a high-volume of real-time images via social media.
The Photo Editors will work and collaborate directly with the Editor in Chief in the day-to-day management and flow of Vidette content for the editions of the newspaper and/or the website, Videtteonline.com. The Photo Editors will be required to become proficient in the web content management system (TownNews), the Adobe Creative Suite software (primarily InDesign and Photoshop).
The position requires about 17 hours per week

The section editors will be paid an hourly scale at $14.50 per hour with assistant editors $14. (These rates will raise on Jan. 1 to match the Illinois state minimum wage.)

Required Qualifications

Be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours during the upcoming fall 2024 semester and be in good academic and disciplinary standing within Illinois State University.
Have some basic understanding of news reporting, photography, web content, social media and graphic design, AP Style, editing and other phases of the daily operation of the campus newspaper and its digital platforms.

Important Information for Applicants

This position is subject to a criminal background investigation and if applicable, an employment history review, based on University Policy 3.1.30 and any offer of employment is contingent upon you passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation and/or an employment history review.
