Position Summary  

The Vice President for University Advancement is responsible for leading the University’s development, alumni relations and marketing and communications programs in order to build awareness of the University and secure philanthropic resources necessary to sustain and advance its mission. The Vice President works closely with the President to define and achieve advancement goals, including current and future fundraising campaigns. The Vice President has overall responsibility for the operation and success of all development programs (annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation giving), advancement systems, alumni relations, and marketing and communications (print and electronic communications, media relations, community relations and marketing and image development). The Vice President is responsible for a portfolio of top major gift prospects and serves as the staff liaison to the Board of Trustees’ University Advancement Committee. 


 Essential Duties and Responsibilities     

  • Develop, lead and manage a team of advancement professionals who will plan and execute integrated and innovative programming in their respective areas.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive plan to meet the University’s fundraising goals, including Annual Giving, Major Gifts, Corporate and Foundation Giving, and Planned Giving, which includes strategies, metrics and management reports. 
  • Oversee the management and achieve the goals of the current Bridge Campaign.
  • Develop and implement plans for future comprehensive or targeted fundraising campaigns.
  • Provide support to the President on his strategic advancement agenda and assist him with his portfolio of prospects to secure leadership gifts.
  • Assist the President in building the fundraising capacity and performance of the Board of Trustees, along with their volunteer involvement in campaigns.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of plans to inform and engage alumni and other key constituents in purposeful and productive ways that support the University’s mission and strategic plans.
  • Provide oversight and support to the marketing and communication programs to achieve their goals in image development, print and electronic communications, media relations and marketing support of student recruitment.
  • Manage a portfolio of top major gift prospects, including their cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, developing relationships that will maximize donor giving over time.
  • Oversee the engagement of University leadership (Provost, Vice Presidents and Deans) in University Advancement activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of the School of Dentistry to ensure that the School’s fundraising goals are achieved. 
  • Oversee the preparation of the University Advancement budget and ensure that resources are used productively. 
  • Serve as a member of the President’s Council and work collaboratively to plan and achieve the University’s strategic plans. 
  • Serve as liaison to the University Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Ensure that all University Advancement programs reflect the University’s Catholic identity and the values of its founders, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and the Society of Jesus.

Requirements

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Seven to ten years experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education; advanced degrees preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the principles and best practices of successful advancement programs with 10 years of experience preferred, including a minimum of five years in non-profit.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven track record of leading and managing successful advancement programs, preferably in higher education, including successful comprehensive campaigns.
  • Affinity with the mission and values of the University of Detroit Mercy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various constituencies and departments, especially leaders of academic units and departments of athletics and facilities.
  • Demonstrated success in soliciting and obtaining major gifts.
  • The Vice President should be able to travel throughout Michigan and out-of-state
  • Physical Requirements

    Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).


    Work Environment

    Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.


    Salary/Pay Information

    Commensurate with experience


    Anticipated Schedule 

    Monday – Friday, 8:30 Am – 5:00 Pm
