The Vice President for Government Relations and Communication Engagement has responsibility for advancing Georgetown’s strategic interests – and the strategic interests of the higher education sector – at both the federal and local levels of governance.
They lead and coordinate the University’s engagement with the Federal Government, the District of Columbia government, and - as appropriate - other governmental entities in the greater Washington metropolitan area.
They also coordinate the University’s engagement with local neighborhood residents, community stakeholders, and higher education advocacy groups throughout the District of Columbia and the broader Washington, DC region.
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement is a member of the COO leadership team in the Office of the COO. They have three direct reports – an Engagement Coordinator, an Associate Vice President for Federal Relations, and an Associate Vice President of Community Engagement and Local Government Affairs, each of whom manages and oversees their own team.
The Vice President interacts at the highest levels of the federal and local government, as well as with community organizations, specifically including the neighborhood leadership of the Georgetown Community Partnership (GCP); and has an increased engagement with the community and neighborhoods near the university’s Capitol Campus, as that campus continues its growth and development.
As well, they work closely with the leadership of the university, most closely coordinating with the Office of the COO and colleagues in University Services (including the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of Compliance and Ethics, Communications and Public Affairs); and regularly engaging with leaders and staff/faculty across the university’s academic campuses (Main Campus, Law Center and Medical Center).
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree – preference for a Master’s degree, J.D., or other relevant graduate or professional degree
- 7 to 10 years of related experience
- Experience cultivating and maintaining relationships with campus neighbors as well as elected officials at the local, state and federal level, on behalf of the University.
- Experience coordinating responses to a wide range of political and policy issues; advising administrators and faculty on strategies to facilitate dialogue with government and community leaders.
- Outstanding analytical and leadership skills with the ability to achieve results in a diverse and complex environment.
- Ability to articulate positions in an impactful and persuasive manner.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills
- Superior planning, organizational, and problem solving abilities with a solutions-oriented mindset
- Ability to build long-term collaborative relationships to benefit the University’s strategic goals
