Position Summary

The vice dean at the Gillings School of Global Public Health (SPH) provides senior-level administrative leadership for the School, modeling the highest level of excellence, fairness, proactivity, support for diversity, inclusion and civility, and understanding about the SPH in the context of UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC system. The individual in the position should have a strong customer service orientation, be adaptable and demonstrate a commitment to breaking down silos across the School and University. The position is responsible for (a) ensuring effective, efficient operations across the School, (b) preventing problems wherever possible and solving them when they occur, and for © advancing the Gillings School through high-level strategic planning and engagement with School and University strategic efforts. The vice dean also is a resource, consultant and problem solver for department chairs and other leaders within the School and a liaison and connector to a range of UNC programs and people. S/he accomplishes these aims with a high level of coordination and collaboration with key groups of faculty, staff and students across the School, as well as individuals and organizations across the University and beyond. S/he will work in an environment that is process-oriented, decentralized and where many people want to be, and are accustomed to being, involved in decision making. The individual in the position has a strong proactive role in preparing the School’s leaders for what lies ahead, but also a critical reactive role in responding quickly and effectively to requests that come from a variety of sources, often with very short turnaround expectations. The position reports directly to the dean and has direct oversight for selected central administrative units (Business and Finance, Human Resources, Facilities, Instructional and Information Systems (IIS), Strategic Analysis and Business Intelligence, Gillings Global Gateway, and the NC Institute for Public Health).

Educational Requirements

The position requires a minimum master’s-level degree in a relevant discipline, including public health, business, public policy and higher education. Doctoral education in a relevant field, including public health, law or higher education, from an accredited university is strongly preferred. Successful applicant must understand, at a minimum, higher education and, ideally, public health.

Qualifications and Experience

- At least eight (8), and preferably more, years of progressively responsible and significant leadership experience, preferably in higher education. Applicant must be able to use higher education data and analysis and demonstrate a high degree of comfort with relevant analytics and metrics for assessment. Applicant must demonstrate success in managing and motivating people with diverse areas of expertise, at all levels of the organization and in managing complex projects and large budgets.
- Excellent skills in oral, written and digital communication (including web).
- Individual must respect and facilitate diversity and inclusion in the broadest sense.
- Successful applicant must be appropriately proactive and astutely reactive. S/he must take initiative and be able to make decisions, even when the data are imperfect. S/he must understand the need for urgency in our actions. S/he must act on this urgency, even as s/he demonstrates a collaborative, customer-service interaction style and even as s/he understands how to work in a decentralized organization with strong units. S/he must be sensitive to political and other considerations. S/he must also be able to work in an organization in which consensus is the goal for decision making and in which, while degrees and rank are important, there is potential for everyone to advance and for some people to move in unconventional ways.
- Successful applicant must appreciate, and act on, the need for transparency. The individual must also recognize the constraints of the state personnel system and the obligations of working in a state educational system and must appreciate the special responsibilities of public universities.
