Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | University Development’s purpose is to support the mission of the university by raising private resources to enhance financial support for students, faculty, programs, and facilities. University Development provides leadership and centralized services to all development offices throughout the University, serving as a focal point for annual giving, application development and IT support; campaign management; constituent programs; corporate and foundation relations; donor relations; gift planning; gift services; industry relations; marketing/communications; parents giving; principal gifts; prospect management, research and analytics; regional programs; scholarships and student aid; talent management; university events; and volunteer engagement. Position Summary | The position of Vice Chancellor for Development (VC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is an outstanding opportunity for a strategic, creative, and collaborative development professional to play a significant role in ensuring the ongoing success of one of the country’s top universities. Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving as a member of the Chancellor’s cabinet, the VC will collaborate with the University’s leadership to set priorities and devise strategies for meeting institution-wide objectives. The VC serves as Carolina’s senior-most development officer as well as the chief executive of the UNC Foundation Inc. The VC will ensure that the development operation effectively engages a large and loyal base of alumni, parents, and friends in the life of Carolina and establishes new connections with a wider community of individuals, corporations and foundations, making the case for transformational philanthropy. The VC will provide innovative leadership and strategic vision necessary to build a comprehensive and robust philanthropic program capable of meeting UNC’s near and long-term priorities as well as establishing new and deeper ties to its constituents. To this end, the Vice Chancellor will work collaboratively with UNC’s academic and administrative units to integrate and advance the fundraising priorities and strategic initiatives of the University. Within the Development division, the Vice Chancellor will build a culture of high achievement and accountability across a 150-person central team, encouraging strong, professional relationships across the various functions and throughout the University. The Vice Chancellor will have direct authority over all central development and development services functions and dotted-line relationships with more than 26 school- and unit-based teams, including 14 foundations. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Post-Baccalaureate degree required with at least ten years or greater relevant professional experience; record of exceptional leadership success; and evidence of professional achievement is required. for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a bachelor’s degree and twelve years or greater relevant professional experience in substitution. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | This position requires strong leadership, exceptional judgment, superb communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with many internal and external constituencies. The Vice Chancellor for Development will bring many of the following professional qualities and experiences: A deep appreciation for the history, mission, achievements and aspirations of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the ability to articulate its uniqueness and relevance. A passion for education, the pursuit of knowledge and the discipline of academic research. Commitment to diversity, intercultural understanding, inclusive institutional excellence, and global engagement. The proven ability to create and lead innovative development programs attuned to the diverse demographics of the University’s alumni, parents, and friends as well as institutional donors, including the ability to articulate a vision for the future and craft a development program capable of achieving that future. Strong personal integrity and work ethic coupled with a sense of humor and perspective as well as personal charisma. Demonstrated ability and experience to plan, manage and successfully close a multi-billion-dollar campaign. Proven management skills in establishing a team- and goal-oriented environment that empowers staff through active communication and delegation and that builds confidence, promotes diversity of thought, and celebrates achievements. The political savvy to navigate a complex academic community; the ability to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships with all members of an operation across the University and a diverse body of alumni and constituents. The ability to visualize an operational structure that embraces the organic ways in which development, alumni relations and communications intersect, creating a collaborative environment that augments the strengths and opportunities for each division. Demonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts of seven figures or more from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Exemplary interpersonal and listening skills, as well as the intellectual depth, maturity, and confidence to garner the trust of the Chancellor, senior academic and administrative leaders, key volunteers, staff, alumni, and other constituents. A consensus builder who enjoys cross-departmental collaboration but who is able to recognize the time for action and be decisive. The ability to create excitement and energy around UNC’s mission and encourage others to support the University; persuasive, persistent and determined. A sharp eye for operational efficiency and the best use of resources, including a demonstrated understanding of budgets and the ability to manage them. Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to understand and translate information for all audiences; clarity, crispness, and elegance in writing and speaking. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Leading candidates will have: At least fifteen years of experience across the range of development functions with substantial exposure to public university foundations, self-governed alumni associations, or similar institutions. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities | This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
