Description of Work Unit
To educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Livestock Medicine and Surgery unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides state-of-the-art veterinary medical services to domestic and exotic livestock species including cattle, sheep, goats, swine, llamas, and alpacas.
Position Summary
This position provides technical and nursing support to the Livestock Medicine and Surgery patients and VTH clinicians, students, and clients. This position triages emergencies, provides nursing care to hospitalized patients, recovers post-operative patients, and communicates with the Livestock Medicine and Surgery team on patient concerns. This position also instructs junior/senior professional veterinary students.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must have:
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment.
  • Minimum 2 years experience handling large animals.
  • Must be comfortable working around patients with traumatic injuries and will routinely observe medical and surgical procedures and euthanasia.

    year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Essential Job Duties


Job Duty Category Patient Care
Duty/Responsibility
This position provides veterinary technical assistance and support to the Livestock service at the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The position will assist the veterinary clinicians, residents, interns, and professional veterinary medical students by providing veterinary technical assistance for the clinical management of VTH hospital patients. 
Perform vet tech care procedures starting with monitoring of in-patient cases and following orders on a patient treatment flow sheet. Provide support for medical and diagnostic procedures (TPR, IV catheters, abdomenocentesis, sample collection, etc.) including procedures setup, aseptic preparation of procedure site, and instruction to students assisting with the procedure. Prepare patients for surgery by clipping surgical site, administering local anesthetic, and aseptically preparing site. Administer medication either by intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, or oral routes to livestock patients. Set up and administer intravenous fluids via catheter and monitor the fluid rate set by the attending clinician and ordered on patient treatment flow sheet. collect rumen fluid from donor cows as instructed by attending clinicians. Administer and calculate the dosage or electrolyte oral drench solution for post-operative LDA or RDA, or other livestock hospital cases as directed by the clinician. Other duties include performing safe animal handling and restraint procedures, patient monitoring, diagnostic and treatment procedures including obtaining vital signs and performing a physical examination, obtaining diagnostic samples including blood, urine, feces, milk, and rumen fluid collection, performing oral-gastric or nasal-gastric intubation, endotracheal intubation, liver biopsy, abdominocentesis, CSF collection, IV catheter placement, and other diagnostic procedures. 
Identifies relevant changes and recommends adjustments to patient’s management. 
Milk in-patient and/or boarding dairy cows as needed.

Support livestock clinicians and students with client services and communication as needed. Review services performed on VTH patients and maintain accurate and timely billing records. Obtain billing sheets and financial estimate information from clinicians, residents, and interns when animals are admitted to the hospital. Provide clinicians, residents, and interns with current fees and information for calculating accurate financial estimates. Help keep clinicians, residents, and interns appraised of current patient bills. Maintain and complete the billing sheets and ensure that they are delivered to the VTH billing office prior to discharge of the patient. Communicate scheduling instructions, patient status, or care instructions to clients when instructed by attending clinician.

Job Duty Category Infection Control and Cleaning
Duty/Responsibility
Perform the cleaning of VTH Livestock service facilities and equipment, and maintain area footbaths. Specifically, perform biosecurity cleaning within the main Livestock medicine hospital. Disinfects halters and lead ropes, grooming tools, muzzles, hoof equipment, tilt table, stocks, refrigerators, microwaves, countertops, patient drug and supply storage bins, and office and rounds rooms floors. Clean surgical instruments and clinical equipment. Clean and disinfect flooring. Daily submission of fecal samples to the diagnostic laboratory. Promote infectious disease control by monitoring all animals within the livestock service hospital and teaching pens for potential contagious infectious diseases. Maintain biosecurity supplies and equipment within the livestock section. Notify the veterinary clinician and biosecurity officer of any patients or teaching animals with suspected contagious disease that pose a risk to other patients or humans. Monitor the hospital facilities and equipment for areas or items where cleaning has become neglected and institute a program to ensure that these areas are cleaned at an appropriate interval.
