|Description of Work Unit||
Our mission is to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community…every day. This work unit exists to anesthetize animals for general maintenance (dental work, cast application, etc.); diagnostic tests (physical exams, endoscopic exams, etc.); and for routine and emergency surgeries. The department also instructs veterinary students, visiting veterinarians and technicians on the principles and practice of veterinary anesthesia by allowing students to anesthetize clinical animals, and guiding the students through preanesthetic patient evaluation, the choice of anesthetic agents, and the process of monitoring the anesthetized patient.
This position provides anesthesia for clinical cases and instructs junior and senior veterinary students as they apply the principles learned in lecture to a clinical setting. The technician position also facilitates the function of the anesthesia by organizing and controlling the daily surgery schedule, repairing and replacing equipment, stocking, and cleaning the area. This position has a flexible daytime schedule and is cross trained in all areas of the Anesthesia service (i.e. large and small animal and research and Continuing Education).
Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in a veterinary technology or animal science AND two years of experience working in a veterinary setting, one year of which must have included working in anesthesiology.
Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Evaluates patients (small, large, and exotic animals) and completes a safe anesthetic plan based on physical, objective, subjective, and history. Premedicates, induces, and maintains general anesthesia whenever necessary. Strives to provide state of the art patient management throughout the perioperative phases. Interacts with clinicians and technicians throughout the hospital to coordinates and control the daily surgery schedule.

Instructs Jr. & Sr PVM students and FRCC veterinary technician interns by guiding their management of pre-op, intra-op, and post-operative complications (i.e. organ failure, blood loss, hypotension, arrhythmias, respiratory compromise, and pain management). Responds to anesthetic emergencies by evaluating patient parameters and initiating appropriate lifesaving treatments (i.e. cardiopulmonary resuscitation, inotropes, and defibrillation). Supports Jr. & Sr PVM students and FRCC veterinary technician interns by guiding their selection and application of anesthetic agents in clinical patients, based on assessment of patient status through evaluation of lab work, radiographs, and direct exam. Iniates supportive teaching methods to enhance students’ self-esteem.

Conducts patient handling and restraint. This includes small, large, and exotic animals. They will need to retrieve patients from the hospital wards, critical care, and/or the barn when needed for anesthesia. Proper restraint facilitates I.V. catheter placement, pre-anesthetic evaluation/monitor placement, and recovery associated with anesthesia. Provides approved and safely handling of controlled substances (i.e. morphine, ketamine, etc.). Complies with DEA laws and appropriate documentation of controlled substances on a daily basis.
