Description of Work Unit
To educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Intermediate Care unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides 24/7 state-of-the-art perioperative care and medical boarding.
Position Summary
This position will provide care to non-critical patients hospitalized in IMCU who are recovering from anesthesia, surgery, or require medical boarding and/or observation.
 
Note to Applicants: This position is filling an after-hours hourly shift. Positions will work Thursday – Saturday and the after-hours typically fall between 12:30 p.m. – 10:30 pm. Applicants can expect 20-30 hours/week with the option to pick up extra shifts.

Minimum Qualifications
An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND one year of experience in small animal (dogs & cats) patient care; specifically in post-operative care, assisting in surgery and monitoring while administering anesthesia.
Substitutions
Two years of experience as described above will substitute for each year of required education.
 
If using experience to substitute for the required associate’s degree, your application will need to demonstrate a minimum of three years of full-time work experience as defined above.

* Experience in post-operative patient care preferred. 
* Experience communicating successfully across disciplines including students, medical staff, faculty, and clients in order to work collaboratively and provide training. 
* Genuine desire to provide nursing care for ill/injured animals with a compassionate approach. 
* Experience training others in technical nursing care proceeds and minor veterinary procedures. 
* Ability to maintain a positive attitude and a proactive approach in a fast-paced and challenging environment. 
* Experience prioritizing caseload and using time management to effectively meet the needs of patients.
* Related state service experience.

Essential Job Duties

Duty/Responsibility
* Provide care to hospitalized patients in Intermediate Care. 
* Recover patients from anesthesia, properly administers medications and fluids as needed, and provides overall patient comfort, under the direction of the primary VTH clinician and according to IMCU & VTH protocols. 
* Work in partnership with the PVM student assigned to the case, and the primary VTH clinician. 
* Communicate with other services regarding the care and transport of patients as necessary within departments of the VTH, and transfers patients as needed. 
* Accurately perform basic drug calculations, observe and recognize changes in patient status, communicate effectively with the IMCU team, and demonstrate caring behavior with all patients. 
* Ensure patient readiness for discharge from the VTH.

* Responsible for maintaining equipment in IMCU, and submitting work orders as needed to make sure that repairs are made. 
* Responsible for cleaning and upkeep of IMCU unit. 
* Responsible for checking stock levels, and replenishing as needed. 
* Responsible for checking drugs and supplies for the expiration date, and replacing when needed. 
* Adhere to VTH purchasing and Central Supply protocol.
