Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) animal resources are comprised of ~100,000 gross assigned sq. ft. in 4 buildings located on the KUMC campus in Kansas City, KS. The entire centralized animal care program at KUMC was fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) in 1992 and has maintained its accreditation since that time. Laboratory Animal Resources has grown to employ 40 persons and provide services for over 100 investigators and 500 research staff.
This position is responsible for biotechnical services and all animal health care aspects at Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR). Veterinary Associate reports to assigned veterinarian and may be required to support other doctors due to specialized knowledge and skills. Assists with clinical, surgical, and post-surgical care. Responsible for preventive medicine programs. Maintains clinical records and submits billing information. Must be able and willing to work weekends and holidays.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree.

Work Experience:

  • Strong communication as evidence by application materials.

  • Must have computer experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification: Certification in a veterinary technology program (L.V.T., R.V.T.).

Work Experience: CRO or Pharma experience

Job Duties

Clinical Duties:

  • Conduct daily health checks, administer prescribed treatments, identify clinical abnormalities, obtain diagnostic samples, and notify veterinarians and investigators of changes in animal health status.

  • Follow standard operating procedures for feeding, watering, and identifying animals using appropriate methods.

  • Handle, restrain, breed, and wean animals as needed. Monitor environmental parameters and record information on cage cards and check sheets.

  • Support veterinarians and investigators pre, during, and post-surgical care.

  • Prepare surgical instruments, perform aseptic surgical techniques, and assist in maintaining medical records and necropsies.

  • Submit water samples for testing and prepare reports for LAR management review.

Veterinarian Services Requests:

  • Complete assigned biotechnical service requests, prepare surgery and supplies quotes, and submit billing information.

  • Assist census group with the preparation of animal use reports.

  • Update traffic flow schedules and assist veterinarians with LAR website updates.

  • Submit cage orders, adhere to work schedule, and attend training sessions.

  • Complete forms and send email notifications to investigators.

Training and Support Duties:

  • Assist in evaluating the animal enrichment program and provide Biotechnical Services and Training.

  • Assist investigators and research staff with training needs and administer training sessions.

Husbandry and Cage Washroom Duties:

  • Perform basic housekeeping duties and adhere to the surgery area decontamination schedule.

Regulatory Duties:

  • Assist in developing and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.

  • Maintain and ensure compliance with established federal, state, and local regulations related to laboratory animals and facilities.

  • Follow established health and safety procedures, facility traffic flow, and security procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
