We are looking for a Veterinary Technician III, to join the Large Animal Ultrasound department of our Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital! We need an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated.  The ideal candidate is responsible for provides technical support within the Ultrasound Service for the multiple disciplinary services of the Large Animal Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. What you need to know

Work Schedule - Ability to work alternative shifts, holidays, weekends, and on-call duty. The Work Schedule for this position is Monday - Friday; 8:00 am – 5pm.

Essential Personnel - This position is considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless or until relieved by their direct supervisor.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

  • Four years technical experience in a veterinary hospital or referral clinic environment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Diverse large animal handling skills (horses, cattle, camelids, swine, sheep, & goats)

  • Strong interpersonal oral and written communication skills to interact harmoniously with a diverse group of people to include faculty, veterinary students, team members, and clients

  • Strong computer background and experience with word processing, spreadsheet, veterinary software, and other processing systems

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Four years of experience participating in ultrasound examinations within a veterinary setting (preferably large animal)

  • Specialty training in ultrasound or related area

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of equipment used within area of specialization: ultrasound and/or other diagnostic imaging equipment preferred

  • Working knowledge of equine anatomy and diagnostic terminology used in ultrasound imaging

  • Ability to perform limited ultrasound imaging to be interpreted by clinicians

Preferred Licenses, Certifications and Registrations:

  • Credentialed veterinary technician (LVT, CVT, RVT, LVMT)

  • Diagnostic medical sonographer (RMDS), and/or equivalent experience (i.e., sonographer course certification)

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • May be required to work some overtime, alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, and on-call duty to train new technicians

  • Ability to lift or move (infrequently) heavy objects

  • Ability to work around animals, hay, or dust

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Duty - Coordinates the Ultrasound Support Service scheduling requests made by all other services within the hospital. Facilitates or performs large animal ultrasound diagnostic examinations and guided procedures within the service area or stall side. Inputs patient information and proper annotations of images during scans. Oversees or performs proper patient preparation for ultrasound scans/procedures. Instructs and assists team members and veterinary students with correct positioning with proper restraint and safe handling of the patients. Properly transcribes clinician reports & notes into electronic medical records. Uploads images and videos into PACS, MACH 7, and other medical records. Sends images and reports to the referring veterinarians and/or clients. Facilitates faculty instruction of professional curriculum to vet students with an emphasis on clinical techniques. Assists in clinical research trials to include comprehensive literature searches and data collation. Without compromising ultrasound service duties, this position may provide limited back-up support to equine medicine services. Performs limited scans to be interpreted by clinician.

  • Maintain Service Area and Equipment - Communicates equipment service needs to immediate supervisor. Identifies issues that may adversely affect equipment performance, troubleshoots, and performs minor equipment repairs or takes other appropriate actions. Assumes responsibility for performing regularly scheduled preventive maintenance and repair of all Ultrasound equipment to ensure proper functioning. Maintains and operates point of care of imaging equipment. Maintains and restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions within the service and on all portable units. Complies with biosecurity by maintaining a sanitary and well-organized service area and equipment.

  • Record Keeping - Maintains and completes accurate veterinary medical records. Maintains accountability for fee and imaging capture by the capital equipment within the ultrasound service. Accepts, edits, and deletes service requests as necessary. Sends studies to PACS or Mach 7. Records hospital fees into the hospital s computer information system. Ensures that all charges generated from treatments, procedures and supplies are correctly entered. Enters patient data into the hospital computer information & imaging system.

  • Supervisory Duties - Assumes intermediate supervisory authority for and trains subordinate veterinary technical staff assigned within the clinical service. Assists with job performance evaluations for assigned staff. Acts as liaison with supervisor on personnel matters affecting morale, job efficiency, and clinical primary care of hospitalized animals.  Performs other duties as assigned.
