What we want

The Veterinary Technician II, under general supervision, provides for and supervises care and treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Provides assistance to the professional staff, instructs veterinary students and subordinate staff in clinical techniques, and oversees the maintenance of the physical area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or

  • equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, and billing entry. Working knowledge of

  • veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps,

  • blood gas analyzers, and monitoring equipment. Experience with technical duties (venipuncture, IV

  • catheter placement, patient care) required. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Must have exceptional customer service and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Oncology, specialty training in Oncology

Responsibilities:

  • Service Specific Job Duties: Delivers chemotherapy treatments as prescribed by the oncology clinicians. Maintains proficiency in the ability to perform difficult and precise IV catheter placements. Performs and assists in oncologic diagnostics and procedures. Maintains proficiency with injectable and inhalant anesthetic methods. Provides client education regarding chemotherapy patient care and side effects. Prepares the radiation patients for their treatment (IV catheter placement, facilitate diagnostic tests, obtain ECG). Positions patients and adjusts equipment to attain consistent and repeatable radiotherapy protocols and radiation planning CTs. Follows predetermined radiotherapy exposure times and makes settings on radiotherapy machines from established tables. Performs Tomotherapy SOP- such as daily maintenance, quality control, and trouble shooting. Receives and responds to notifications of Tomotherapy machine/equipment failure.

  • Teaching and Research: Assists faculty, staff, and students with delivering instruction of professional veterinary curriculum in the small and large animal hospitals. Actively participates in clinical research activities

  • General Technical Job Duties: Provides patient restraint. Prepares and administers medications. Assists faculty and students with patient care. Prepares patients for treatment procedures. Prepares work area for treatment procedures. Gathers supplies related to procedures. Assists faculty and students with data entry in patient’s medical record. Helps coordinate consultation and/or direct involvement with patient care by other services. Transports patients to designated service areas in the hospital. Submits patient samples for diagnostic testing. Inventory management and fee entry. Positions and operates hospital equipment         

  • Assists with maintaining a safe, sanitary, well-organized service area: Infection prevention best practices. Cleaning and disinfecting. Helps provide oversight for faculty, staff, and students on service area specific safety procedures. Assists with demonstrating and communicating Hospital patient handling and restraint best practices

  • Required training, compliance, and administrative procedures: Required TrainTraqs by Texas A&M and VMTH. Time and leave entry into workday. Email correspondence. School and Hospital Accreditation (AVMA). Research compliance (IACUC, USDA, AALAC). Performs other duties as assigned.
