Description of Work Unit | The Colorado State University, Veterinary Teaching Hospital exists to providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community while educating the next generation of veterinarians at a tertiary level teaching hospital. Critical Care Services provides medical care for small animals and exotics on an emergency basis and intensive 24 hour care to patients who are admitted for extended treatment. We simultaneously provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, graduate veterinarians, and others, conduct and support clinical research, and provide referral outreach to clients and referring veterinarians. The Critical Care team has extensive expertise and experience in emergency and critical care cases and handles any veterinary emergency rather it requires minor to rapid lifesaving treatments. The overnight veterinary technician receives a 14% shift differential pay for all weekday hours worked and 20% for weekend and holiday hours. Position Summary | This position must: 1) Triage all incoming emergency cases and assess the client situation for optimal patient care. 2) Stabilizes emergent, medically dynamic patients. 3) Initiate and assist with advanced procedures such as pericardiocentesis and positive pressure ventilation. 4) Monitors patients to assess response to treatment or need to initiate treatment. 5) Coordinates and provides care of ill or injured animals with doctors, students and other staff, including nursing care and technical procedures. 6) Provides medically-experienced phone triage/screening, and support. 7) Facilitates coordination and communication between appropriate hospital departments, clients, and referring veterinarians. 8) Provides clinical and didactic instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, technicians, graduate veterinarians and others. 9) Directs activities of Urgent Care and Critical Care Unit, oversees maintenance, charging and provides continuity of care. Substitutions | A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology or directly related field (e.g.: Animal Science, etc.) will substitute for the associate’s degree. |
Preferred Qualifications | The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position: * Certified Veterinary Technologies, Registered Veterinary Technologist or Licensed Veterinary Technologist. * One+ year of experience in an emergency and/or critical care position. * Demonstrated experience providing customer service in a fast-paced environment (e.g.: high traffic, stressful, or rapid problem solving). * A strong desire to learn and advance medical and technical knowledge base. * Proactively teach and courage in a supportive manner. * Ability to be compassionate and empathetic to clients in emotional situations. * Demonstrated experience working with a team and managing conflict. * Strong attention to detail and analytical skills. * Ability to problem-solve and critically think through situations/scenarios. * Prioritization and organizational skills. * Related state service experience |
