What we want

The Veterinary Technician Assistant, under supervision, assists the veterinary technicians in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) performing a variety of basic functions, especially with the delivery and instruction of anesthesia services for orthopedic patients. This position assists faculty veterinarians in animal nursing care, record keeping, recovery, etc.

Other Factors: May participate in providing emergency duty coverage for all areas of the hospital when students are absent and during holidays. Ability to work around animals, hay and dust, or disinfectants. Ability to lift heavy loads. 

Essential Personnel: This position is considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless or until relieved by their direct supervisor.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Two years of related experience in animal care

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Basic computer skills

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others


Preferred Experience: 

  • Experience in veterinary medicine 


Preferred Licenses and Certifications: 

  • Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to provide exceptional customer service

  • Experience in anesthesia or orthopedics 

Responsibilities:

  • Anesthesia Assistance - Under the supervision of a Vet Tech I or higher, assists during the administration of pre-anesthetic and anesthetic agents. Provides patient restraint during preparation for anesthesia (IV catheter, diagnostic testing, etc.). Assists technicians with handling tools during the intubation of patients for administration of inhalation anesthesia, recording of physiologic status during anesthesia, transportation of patients during anesthesia, and during post-anesthetic recovery. Assists with anesthetic emergencies under the supervision of a Vet Tech I or higher and a licensed veterinarian. Assists with anesthetic machine maintenance as needed. Provides support in the coordination with the organization of the daily treatment schedule. Performs basic blood sample analysis. 

  • Technical Assistance  - Under the direction and supervision of a licensed veterinarian or a Vet Tech I or higher, provides assistance to technicians with patient care and restraint. Helps maintain the flow of the service for orthopedic patients. Assists with restraint during orthopedic exams. Transports and monitors sedated patients to Radiology. Assists in the submission of patient blood, urine, and tissues and submits samples for testing. Assists other clinical service areas as needed. 

  • Maintains sanitary and well-organized Orthopedic treatment areas - Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Orders supplies to maintain stock in storage and office areas. Cleans and disinfects equipment, supplies, and cages. Assists in keeping the treatment areas clean and workable. 

  • Record keeping - Assists in ensuring that all charges generated from treatments, procedures, and supplies are correctly entered. Enters patient data into electronic medical record system when requested. Submits requests to the applicable departments when requested. Performs other duties as assigned.
