What we want

The Veterinary Technician Assistant assists in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under the supervision of a professional staff member or Veterinary Technician II or higher. Assists with direct patient care in the Progressive Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit. Provides assistance to the professional staff and helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of experience in animal husbandry.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry.

  • Ability to manage time wisely and prioritize duties.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively at all levels within the Hospital.

  • Must be able to work within time constraints and in crisis situations.

  • Ability to manage expectations and conflict.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant training on animal care / husbandry.

  • Two or more years of experience in a small animal veterinary hospital, referral clinic or specialty hospital environment.

  • Certified Veterinary Assistant.

  • Advanced knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Provides physical restraint for the safe handling of patients. Performs or assists with the collection of patients’ blood, urine, tissues, and submits to appropriate laboratory. Performs basic assessment under direct supervision of patients admitted to the hospital and reports changes to appropriate personnel. Records all medications administered, fluid types and volumes administered, information regarding urine output, mentation, appetite, and other parameters as needed in electronic medical record system. Monitors patients to detect any change in their clinical status. Clean and disinfect cages.

  • General Technical Duties: Records changes in the medical orders, as directed by the clinician. Captures fees and inputs fees into the system. Performs laboratory tests (NOVA, glucose level, VCM, PCV/TS, blood typing, and lactate). Provides life sustaining emergency care. Assists clinicians and students with laboratory sample collection. May assist in other service areas based on patient and staffing needs.

  • Equipment maintenance: Clean, disinfect, and care for equipment in the service area using various methods. May perform minor repair and replace disposable parts.

  • General duties: Maintains inventory and replenishes stock. Ability to be in on call status.

  • Required training, Compliance, Administrative Procedures: Remains current with various requires TAMU and department specific training courses. Maintains current rabies prophylaxis. Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate. Enter hours worked and leave request in Workday system. Answers emails. Assists with accreditation visits (AVMA, IACUC, AALAC, AAHA). Performs other duties as assigned to support patient care and hospital needs.
