Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Two years of related experience in animal care

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills, ability to work well with others

  • No inhibiting allergies to animals or disinfectants, ability to lift heavy loads

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements or Factors:

  • Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless or until relieved by the direct supervisor

  • Ability to lift heavy loads

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA)

  • Experience in animal handling and animal care

  • Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA)

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Assistance - Under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician I or higher, provides restraint for medical procedures, feeds and walks patients per clinician’s orders, obtains and stocks supplies for the service. Observes and reports changes in patient status or behavior to appropriate medical staff. Proficient in use of computers and comfortable with the Veterinary Medical Information System (VMIS) and Instinct. Assists with medical procedures, performs basic blood sample analysis, assists with transporting patients to CT, radiology, or ultrasound. Assists with patient triage, obtaining patient vitals and treatments under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician I or higher.

  • Inventory Control and Hospital Maintenance - Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Sanitizes and disinfects animal housing areas within SA-ER. Maintains a functional, organized, and safe working environment at all times. Disinfects exam tables, equipment, and animal cages. Replenishes clean laundry. Picks up service pharmacy orders and restocks the service with necessary supplies. Cleans floors, sinks and countertops.

  • Holiday Coverage or Alternate Shifts - Requires participating in Holiday coverage, as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
