Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Veterinary Resident for the Animal Care department a division of the Office for Research.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides clinical veterinary care and oversight to a wide variety of animal species (Rodents, Aquatic species, Rabbits, Pigs, Dogs, NHP, Woodchucks, Gerbils, Hamsters, Guinea pigs, and Farm animal species) owned by the University and used in teaching and research.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the Director of Veterinary Services, and all other veterinarian mentors/faculty in the Residency Training Program in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Rotates in various animal research facilities at Rutgers University, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) and Princeton University.
  • Works closely with veterinary staff and animal care staff to ensure that appropriate housing and care is provided for animals and works with faculty and researchers who use animals to ensure humane treatment of animals in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and guidelines.
  • Provides instructional and hands-on training, assist in novel technique development, and will perform clinical and technical services such as providing clinical care to all animals, experimental surgery, and surgical and anesthesia support.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.) from an accredited veterinary school or equivalent.
  • If graduated from a non-accredited college, ECFVG certification is required.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position. 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to evaluate the health status of a wide range of animal species under guidance and independently after training, a knowledge or good understanding of research best practices to optimize animal survival and well-being.
  • Ability to perform basic animal handling techniques, good understanding of experimental surgery and anesthesia and analgesia procedures, and technical skillset on a wide range of animal species.
  • Training is an important aspect of this position.
  • Presentations are given in a variety of formats from formal lectures and small groups to one-on-one instruction.
  • Good public speaking ability as well as teaching skills.
  • Must pass a post-offer, pre-placement medical evaluation to include a medical history and physical examination.
  • Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers.
  • Computer skills: Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and other custom software programs.
  • Must have a broad knowledge of all aspects of veterinary medicine within a university or industrial or private practice setting.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work tactfully with a wide range of people.
  • Must communicate well in English and have excellent written and verbal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of elective rotations in the specialty of laboratory animal medicine or equivalent specialized experience.
  • Completion of a first author research publication acceptable as per the ACLAM publication committee criteria.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine at least one state in the U.S.A. (New Jersey license.)
  • Unrestricted New Jersey Driver’s License or eligibility.
  • Per federal regulation, must undergo a criminal background check in order to be able to work with controlled substances.
  • Accreditation by the United States Department of Agriculture in New Jersey.
Equipment Utilized
  • Needs to have familiarity with veterinary equipment, must be able to assist with the development of Standard Operating Procedures, and be able to train staff on the correct use and maintenance of this equipment.
  • Surgical equipment – anesthetic machines, physiological monitors.
  • Diagnostic equipment – microscopes, centrifuges.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • This position requires the employee to walk and stand for several hours when conducting inspections of animal facilities and laboratories.
  • Ability to move up to 50lbs due to needs of large animal sedation and recovery, and to work with large farm animals.
  • Travels to all campuses and training sites.
