Job Description

Vet Care Tech - ECC: Work involves assisting a veterinarian in technical procedures and activities involving animal care, specifically in the areas of pain management and critical care. Successful candidate assists team clinicians and care-giving colleagues with the reception, treatment, and monitoring of all patients within the Small Animal Emergency Critical Care unit. Candidate oversees and instructs professional veterinary students in preparation of animals and equipment for medical procedures and delivery of care. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: supervising and performing ordered treatments for ECC and hospitalized patients; assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; transmitting case updates to oncoming colleagues; assisting in care of emergency cases brought to small animal receiving area; and preparing and submitting charge tickets for all services rendered according to hospital fee schedules. The successful candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week on second shift rotating between weekdays and weekends with required holidays based on a team rotation. This position will be eligible for shift differential for evening hours and weekend hours worked. Successful candidate must be a Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of Ohio and complete a background check.

Physical Requirements

Standing for long periods of time; Pushing/pulling/lifting up to 50 pounds; Exposure to animal dander and/or zoonotic diseases; Exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or bio hazardous waste.

Required Education

Associates Degree in Animal Health/Veterinary Medicine.

Required Experience

Per Classified Civil Svc Specs.

Desired Experience

Previous experience as a licensed, registered veterinary technician and/or Veterinary Assistant. Preference to prior experience especially focusing on anesthesiology and/or critical services. Prefer board certification/recognition from the Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthetists and the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians.


Additional Information:

The targeted hiring range for this position is $27.55 - $34.47 per hour commensurate with education and experience.

By the start of employment, all newly hired employees must receive at least the first dose of a two-dose series or a single dose of a one-dose series COVID-19 vaccination. Individuals who choose a two-dose series vaccination must receive the second dose within 45 days of their start date. Proof of vaccination will be required at time of hire.

Candidates may request a medical or religious exemption from the vaccination requirement. Campus employees may also request an exemption for personal reasons. Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, College of Medicine or OSUP Employees are not eligible for personal exemptions. All exemptions are subject to Ohio State’s approval and subject to change, including revocation, due to legal and regulatory requirements.
