Job Description

The Veterinary Medical Center at The Ohio State University is recruiting for a Veterinary Care Technician 2 to work in its Oncology Service. Work involves assisting a veterinarian in technical procedures and activities involving animal health and disease within a specialty area of the Veterinary Medical Center including surgery (LA/SA), equine medicine, Internal Medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, oncology, rehabilitation, radiology and farm animal. Performs a variety of animal care responsibilities under the close supervision of a VCT Supervisor and clinical veterinarians. Specific duties will be determined by assigned area of responsibility and may involve floating or cross-training through various areas to develop skills and technique. 
 
Successful candidate participates in patient receiving; organizes, directs, and provides helpful and collegial assistance during regular clinic hours; assists with animal restraint; instructs and performs venipuncture, IV catheter placement; cystocentesis; collects and submits laboratory samples and distributes laboratory results; coordinates students during patient receiving so that case flow is organized and efficient; coordinates patient admissions; facilitates patient discharge; schedules and performs technician patient appointments and generates the appropriate complete medical record for such cases; assists with scheduling and coordination of special procedures including CT and MRI scans, Radiation Oncology appointments, and other advanced imaging or specialty consultations throughout the hospital; enters charges for all procedures and tests performed on patients; assists with receiving emergencies; administers chemotherapy to patients; instructs and observes veterinary and veterinary technician students during procedures and appointments; provides cleanliness, organization, and stocking of the oncology ward and receiving area; assists with communication to the new and current clients and referring veterinarian including follow-up calls to report lab results, obtains progress reports, refills prescriptions, screens client and referring veterinarian phone calls about questions regarding oncology problems and decisions regarding the urgency and timing of case referral in association with the attending veterinarian; coordinates clinical trials and manages a busy oncology ward; and other duties as assigned. 
 
The successful candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week on first shift between the hours of 7:00am and 5:30pm subject to flex due to business needs. Successful candidate must be a Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of Ohio and complete a background check.

Minimum Education Required

Per Classified Civil Svc Specs. Degree from an accredited veterinary technology program (associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree); completed and successfully passed VTNE prior to hire date. State of Ohio Registered Veterinary Technician (Required) at the time of hire. 

Desired Qualifications

Previous experience as a licensed, registered veterinary technician and/or Veterinary AssistantPreference given to those with previous Oncology experience

Physical Requirements

Standing for long periods of time

Pushing/pulling/lifting up to 50 pounds

Exposure to animal dander and/or zoonotic diseases

Exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or bio hazardous waste

Requires weekend, nights, and/or holiday hours

State of Ohio Registered Veterinary Technician (Required) at the time of hire

Target Hiring Range: $23.65- $29.57 per hour
