Minimum Qualifications

Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology/Animal Health Technology.  Licensed and Registered as a Veterinary Technician. Two years of related experience in a veterinary clinic or research setting that involved hands on work with animals.  Lab Animal Technician (LAT) Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. If not AALAS Assistant Lab Animal Technician (ALAT) certified, ALAT certification examination must be taken within 12 months of hire, followed by achieving the AALAS LAT certification within 12 additional months. If only AALAS ALAT certified, then effort is required to achieve LAT certification within 24 months of hire.  Grade NE. Wage Minimum $17.00/hr. 

Position Description

The veterinary associate provides veterinary care for a variety of laboratory animal species involved in biomedical research.  The person filling this position will work closely with veterinarians, other veterinary and husbandry staff, and researchers to ensure animal welfare and promote sound research. 

Essential Duties

  • Perform daily animal health observations on a variety of species, be able to recognize health issues, and report accurate descriptions to veterinarian.
  • Be able to accurately calculate and administer medications/treatments/test articles to various species in a variety of manners including IV, SQ, IP, and IM injections, as well as, oral and inhalation routes of administration.
  • Accurately assess response to therapy and report to veterinarian.
  • Maintain detailed records regarding veterinary examination, treatments, and experimental procedures in compliance with various policies and standards including but not limited to the USDA Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care of Use of Laboratory Animals, U of L IACUC, the DEA, and AAALAC utilizing appropriate computer skills to carry out such duties.
  • In accordance with standard veterinary practices and surgical sterile technique, prepare animals for surgery and assist with various procedures. 
  • Perform, on various animal species, intravascular catheter placement, anesthetic induction, endotracheal intubation, and anesthesia monitoring/recovery. 
  • Manage sentinel and quarantine programs for large rodent colonies.
  • Carry out proper sample collection (blood, tissues, fecal, and other specimens), ensuring appropriate sample storage and packaging for testing with outside diagnostic laboratories. Able to perform standard parasitology tests and run CBC and Chemical analysis on in house analyzers.
  • Maintenance of an accurate inventory of medical and surgical supplies.
  • Participate in training of students and research staff.
  • Work weekends, holidays and be on call as scheduled accordingly.
