Veterinarian Technician, Division of Comparative Medicine - Georgetown University Medical Center

The mission of Georgetown’s Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) is to provide state of the art facilities and quality animal care to support biomedical research and teaching missions of the University, and to comply with all applicable animal welfare regulations and guidelines. DCM also advises and educates researchers, staff and students on animal models and biomethodology while promoting best practices for the responsible use of animals.

The Veterinary Technician is the first responder for animal health issues, providing reports, pre and post procedure care of animals and technical services such as small animal surgery, animal identification, tail biopsies, blood collection, and drug treatments, etc.  Reporting to the Division Director, and interacting daily with Principal Investigators and lab staff, and frequently with GUMC and University staff, vendors, professional associations and site visitors, the Veterinary Technician has duties that include but are not limited to:

Veterinary Care and Research Study Support

  • Perform health checks on all USDA covered species and maintain records within USDA required parameters
  • Perform animal observations, diagnose and initiate treatments for animals identified on health reports; enter information into e-Sirius and follow up with researchers and DCM staff as needed; perform weekly rechecks of all open health report cases
  • Perform injections, blood collection, tissue collection, treatment of wounds, oral drug administration etc. in a wide variety of species
  • Maintain written and computerized veterinary medical records and health report notifications and responses
  • Provide surgical and non-surgical study support services for research projects including assistance in design/revision of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and study related forms
  • Coordinate and provide technical oversight of procedures
  • Manage data collection, analysis and study documentation
  • Provide anesthesia support, pre- and post-procedural care
  • Coordinate surgical study equipment repair and calibration
  • Provide technical assistance with all rodent genotyping and rodent research requests
  • Provide technical assistance with surgery in all PHS covered and USDA covered species, including but not limited to: endotracheal intubation, catheter placement, blood sample collection, anesthesia administering and monitoring, intraoperative monitoring, postoperative recovering, and postoperative care
  • Conduct tumor measurements and monitoring, including regular tumor measurements, updating excel docs that researchers can access with data including an averages of all sizes, eventual euthanasia of animals and collection of tumors once desired volume has been reached, collecting tumors in cassettes in researcher’s desired suspension, and eventual physical transport to histology after conclusion of study for analyzing
  • Perform regular excel updates and spreadsheet maintenance to support research staff and provide them with individual data per ongoing study
  • Complete research request for genotype assistance by providing identification of animals as well as specimen samples for genotype processing

Veterinary Technical Services Support Unit Coordination

  • Maintain and submit billing records for special technical services provided for investigators
  • Perform, process, analyze and prepare specimens for shipment to outside laboratories
  • Manage and direct veterinary equipment purchases, equipment maintenance and inventory of veterinary supplies
  • Provide oversight of veterinary/research resource technical spaces
  • Respond to and advise researchers via written and computerized veterinary records, health notifications and in-person consultations
  • Meet with students and/or research staff who would like to improve on species-specific techniques such as blood collections, injections, gavage, etc.
  • Provide researchers with necessary anesthetic or analgesic drugs at appropriate concentrations in a timely manner and adhering to DEA requirements

Training and Professional Development

  • Create and lead internal training program for departmental animal technician staff for AALAS certification, ALAT, LAT, LATG, etc.
  • Develop and manage the DCM Husbandry Assistance in Technical Care training program, a lecture and hands-on based program that reinforces animal welfare and care within the husbandry staff
  • Manage hands-on training workshops for research investigator/personnel in Rodent Biomethodology and Rodent Surgery

Rodent Health Surveillance and Quarantine Programs

Coordinate, under direction of the veterinarian, the rodent health surveillance and quarantine programs which includes collecting, reviewing and processing of diagnostic samples; ordering new sentinel animals and housing of animals through the facility, obtaining lab results, and maintaining and managing sentinel health and surveillance logs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field or Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology
  • 5 to7 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of biomedical research using animals and animal models
  • Excellent computer, interpersonal, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Availability and willingness to share on-call responsibilities with other Veterinary Technicians

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in the laboratory animal science field
  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level or higher (LATG)
