Job Summary

Primarily receive, stabilize and treat canine and feline emergency patients with the assistance of the Emergency and Critical Care Service faculty and residents when needed. Teach and train professional veterinary students, interns, and technicians in providing small animal emergency care.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis.   The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

 

THIS POSITION ENDS 10 MONTHS FROM DATE OF HIRE WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION AND/OR BECOMING CAREER.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.

• May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work daytime and after hours for all of the clinical duties assigned, including some UC holiday shifts. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

• Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.

• May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.

• The incumbent will work under the direction of the faculty in the discipline of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum License/Certification:

 

  • Must possess a California Veterinarian license by the date of hire.

 

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or foreign equivalent.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in small animal practice.

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

• Interpersonal communication skills to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

 

Preferred Education/Experience:   

• Teaching experience of professional veterinary students in emergency medicine.

• Completion of a small animal rotating or emergency medicine internship.

• 5 or more years of small animal emergency practice experience.
