Job Description

Position Description: The Vehicle and Equipment Technician independently oversees the daily operation of the University Motor Pool, which includes cars and multi-passenger vans. The position inspects and repairs vehicles and equipment so they run safely, efficiently and reliably.  Performs a variety of skilled work in the maintenance and repair of all University owned vehicles and equipment.  Duties will involve troubleshooting, diagnostic and repair of cars, trucks, vans, medium and heavy-duty trucks and specialized construction and landscape equipment.  Duties involve the operation and repair of both gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles and equipment. Provides emergency response for fleet vehicles when breakdowns, problems, or questions occur.  The position provides excellent customer service to the campus community.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires the completion of apprenticeship in automotive mechanics or a mechanic’s training program. Must have three years of experience maintaining and servicing vehicles.  Must have a valid Kansas driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience
  • Computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office software.

Responsibilities:

  • Process transportation request vouchers; schedule vehicles and drivers in order to accommodate requests.
  • Ensure that vehicles are serviced, clean, and safe for travel.
  • Schedule training courses related to vehicle and equipment maintenance, the use of safety equipment, and other department policies and procedures.
  • Acquire and keep an accurate inventory of all equipment, tools, supplies, and materials.
  • Provide preventative maintenance, repair, and service for all university vehicles and equipment.
  • Coordinate repairs, warranty, recalls and all other services with local vendors when outside the scope of the department.
  • Provide feedback to supervisor regarding needed equipment and supplies for the successful operation of the Motor Pool.
  • Approve electronic billing for mileage, fuel, service repair, and labor. Authorize invoices and submit billing to the corresponding university department.
  • Maintain inventory for fuel usage and storage. Keep accurate fuel records for KDHE (underground fuel storage tank).
  • Within the first year of employment, must obtain and maintain certification with KDHE for Kansas Underground Storage Tank Operator Training for Tank Management Service. 
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on engines, transmissions, alternators, blowers, starters, electric ignition, pumps, and fuel injection systems.  Assess the maintenance and repair needs of assigned vehicles; complete maintenance and repairs in a timely manner.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot issues to determine cause of failure; perform operational test of systems.
  • Repair brakes, wheel bearings, exhaust systems, drive train, and suspension.
  • Electrical and charging systems to troubleshooting and wiring.
  • Be able to do electric and gas welding.
  • Minor body work.
  • Maintain shop records and compile statistical information regarding time, repair history, labor, part orders and vehicle downtime.
  • Safety inspection on vehicles.
  • Exhibit outstanding customer service

Physical Activities:
Job duties require physical abilities including manual dexterity and trunk strength. Work conditions include lifting and carrying heavy objects. Heavy lifting is required to change and balance tires, move parts, etc. Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.  Must be able to bend, reach, grasp, kneel, crawl, climb, and balance in order to work with tools and perform repairs. Requires the use of repetitive hand, wrist, and finger movements in order to use tools and complete other computer-based tasks. Must have clarity of vision and precise hand-eye coordination in order to operate equipment and perform manual tasks. 
Environmental Conditions:
This position involves exposure to loud noise levels, including noise from vehicles, tools, and other mechanical equipment. Exposed to potentially hazardous materials. 

Additional Information:
Employees in this position must be diligent when working with dangerous chemicals and gas fumes. Safety procedures must be followed at all times.
