The University of Tennessee Space Institute Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) department in Tullahoma, Tennessee is seeking Research Associates. Two vacancies, regular, full-time staff exempt monthly paid positions with excellent benefits.  Salary dependent upon education and experience.  The position(s) are initially offered for a one-year term with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.

 

Position Summary:
Researcher will provide professional contributions to research program and projects requiring specialized knowledge and experience in supercomputing, programming, and technical writing.  Position(s) will support the faculty in their research and student management. Performs complex research-related work assignments.  Launch jobs, monitor progress of jobs, post-process results and documentation.  Write reports, manage deadlines, support faculty with technical papers.  Provide work direction and skill building exercises to students. Performs other duties as required.

 

Job Function/Responsibilities

  • Support supervisor in computational work - launch jobs, monitor progress of jobs, post-process results and documentation.  Provides professional contributions to research programs and projects requiring specialized knowledge and experience in supercomputing, programming, and technical writing.  Develops and/or assists in the development of complex research proposals, plans, and protocols. Designs, conducts, modifies, and sets up experiments, studies, and investigations.
  • Documents and interprets results of research. Writing reports, managing deadlines, support with technical papers. Prepares internal reports and external publications for peer review.  Delivers presentations on research.  Conducts literature reviews.
  • Provides work direction or supervision to students and other research staff.  Also provides student skill building exercises.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to use linux operating system including supercomputing.
  • Computer programming in python and C++.
  • Ability to use Windows word, excel, outlook
  • Discipline and positive attitude with ability to learn.
  • Technical writing abilities (papers and reports).
  • The successful candidate must be able to work in an environment conforming to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements.

Preferred KSAs

  • Ability to work with other students.
  • Ability to listen to the supervisor and to follow instructions.
  • Ability to finish work on time as agreed upon.
  • Pointwise grid generation.
  • Tecplot.

Education

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • Prefers Master’s or Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field

Required level/type of experience and/or years of experience

  • One year experience in supercomputing, programming, and technical writing.

Preferred level/type of experience and/or years of experience

  • Master’s or PhD preferred in aerospace engineering or related field.  At least 2 to 5 years’ experience in supercomputing, programming, and technical writing.

Supervisory/Work Direction Responsibilities

  • This position provides work direction to others (includes students).
