The UT Space Institute Research Engineering and Operations Department in Tullahoma, Tennessee is seeking a Machinist (Technical Specialist 1, MR07). One vacancy, regular, full-time non-exempt hourly paid position with excellent benefits.  Salary dependent upon education and experience.

Position Summary:

Machinist/fabricator with experience in the setup, maintenance and operation of machine shop equipment including mills, lathes, grinders, CNC mills/lathes and assist in the fabrication of advanced research apparatus and models. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Function/Responsibilities

  • CNC programming, set up and machining of 3, 4 and 5 axis mills, multi axis lathes, and development of critical machining processes. CAM Programming in support of machining operations.
  • Fabricates, installs, operates, maintains, inspects, and repairs specialized equipment per regulations, codes, and professional practices.
  • Assists in training and acts as mentor to engineers, faculty and students, sharing knowledge on materials, machining and fabrication techniques.
  • Maintains clean shop environment, maintains inventory and performs other responsibilities as assigned
  • Performs other related duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Reads, interprets, and uses blueprints and schematics, instructions, manuals, or shop drawings to understand specifications of work.
  • Familiar with use of personal computers and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, stairs, work in small/restricted areas, and lift and carry 25 lbs.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Ability to pass a background security check allowing work on ITAR projects including citizenship status.
  • Ability to obtain a Security Classification if required.
  • Must be able to occasionally work evenings.

Preferred KSAs

  • Associate degree in technical field
  • CAD Experience
  • Experience with HAAS CNC machines
  • Tooling and fixture design.
  • 3D additive printing
  • Experience machining one or more of the following materials: nickel-based stainless-steel alloys (Inconel, Monel, etc.), Copper, Aluminum and/or Titanium
  • Outside processing knowledge including: heat treat, plating, coating, EDM, grinding, etc.
  • CNC programming skills, preferably GibbsCAM
  • Experience operating heavy lifting equipment such as cranes and forklifts
  • Knowledge of additional fabrication techniques (welding, plasma cutting, CNC routers etc.…)

Education/Experience

  • Requires high school diploma or GED.
  • Requires Vocational or technical training.
  • Prefers Associate’s Degree

Required level/type of experience and/or years of experience

  • 5+ years’ experience with CNC programming and operation.
  • Experience with CAM programming.
  • Experience with manual mills, lathes and general machine shop equipment.

Preferred level/type of experience and/or years of experience

  • 5+ years experience as a CAM programmer.
  • Experience with GibbsCAM CAM software
  • Experience with Haas CNC equipment

Supervisory/Work Direction Responsibilities

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
