Description

 

The University of Tennessee Space Institute Facilities Department in Tullahoma, Tennessee is seeking a Trades Specialist 4, MR 08.  The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by an excellent university benefits package. This is a full-time regular staff non-exempt hourly paid position.

Position Summary:

Install, maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems up to 480 volts, plumbing, HVAC/R, boilers, and carpentry.  Maintain smooth operations of buildings, equipment and machinery on campus.  Install new electrical systems on campus as needed for research projects.  Work from specifications and drawings to maintain equipment.  Proper safe use of equipment such as, but not limited to, electrical multimeter, pipe threading equipment, HVAC recovery systems, as well as forklift, aerial boom lifts, etc.  Position is responsible for assuming the leadership role of the Maintenance Supervisor in his absence.  Position must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance to work in secured facilities.

Job Function/Responsibilities

  •         Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and overhaul all types of equipment and machinery, such as air conditioning and refrigeration (chillers), electrical systems up to 480 volts, maintain energy management system, all valves and pumps, cooling towers, heating systems (boilers/electrical), and pneumatic systems.  Install new electrical systems on campus for power sources needed for research projects.  Replaces high voltage fuses in 25,000-volt substation to all building pad mount transformers.
  •          In the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform the responsibilities of the Supervisor, such as assigning work orders, ordering appropriate materials needed to complete projects, troubleshooting maintenance issues.  Maintenance personnel issues are referred to the Director of Facilities.
  •         Perform preventative maintenance on campus systems, such as equipment and machinery, HVAC, electrical systems, and energy management.
  •          Use energy management system to help maintain appropriate air flow to campus.
  •          Work from specifications and drawings to order replacement parts for all types of equipment.
  •          Provide layout and complete project installations.
  •          Perform advanced plumbing including installation, maintenance, and repair.
  •          Perform carpentry projects such as constructing walls, drywall, painting, and hanging doors.
  •         Performs other related duties as required.

This position requires the ability to operate power tools/machinery, operate light or heavy equipment, wear personal protective equipment if required, climb ladders, work in high places, to walk over extended periods, and work while bending and stooping.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.  Must have ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, staff and university personnel and work with others in a respectful, cooperative manner and be a team player.  Must have ability to follow directions, pass mandatory Program for Minors training, pass a background check, take annual safety and OHSA training as required by the state and campus safety office. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance to work in secured facilities.  Must be reliable in attendance, clean and neat in appearance, and be able to perform moderately strenuous activities.  Must be able to occasionally work on call. Workdays Monday through Friday, hours 7:30 am until 4:30 pm. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  •         Specialized knowledge of electrical troubleshooting on control diagrams and schematics, plumbing, pipe threading, HVAC/R, and carpentry.
  •          Knowledge of energy maintenance systems.
  •         Possess organizational, management, analytical, and technical skills.
  •         Ability to understand and apply regulations (OSHA, EPS, NFPA, DOT, etc.) to the university setting.
  •         Ability to inspect/survey workplaces, products, maintenance and other related systems for compliance with established safety policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards.
  •         Strong oral and written communication skills.
  •         Ability to adjust to changing work situations and environment.
  •         Ability to prioritize work requirements.
  •         Ability to work independently or as a member of the team in order to achieve result with accuracy and attention to detail.
  •         Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment, and diplomacy in the execution of duties.
  •         Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  •         Ability to assess situations on a case-by-case basis for compliance with regulations.
  •         Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

 

Supervisory/Work Direction Responsibilities

This position provides work direction to others (includes students).   •         Requires Vocational or technical training in Industrial Electricity, Industrial Maintenance, and/or HVAC.
  •         Requires a Valid Driver’s license, State Electrical license, Current Refrigerant Certification, and the ability to complete mandatory Program for Minors training and pass associated background check.  
  •         Requires ability to obtain and maintain pertinent certifications required by department.
  •         Requires ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance to work in secured facilities.

  •        At least four years’ experience in maintenance and troubleshooting commercial electrical and/or refrigeration systems.
