Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
UNC-Chapel Hill collaborates with nearby NC State University to extend both universities’ temporary staffing power by operating as a shared service for both institutions. Under this partnership, University Temporary Services (UTS) provides exclusive temporary staffing services to UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State, employing candidates to work as temporary employees in a variety of jobs on both campuses.
Position Summary
Job Description:
The Marketing and Communications Specialist leads communications for the UNC Chapel Hill University Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The Marketing and Communications Specialist will develop, implement, and maintain communications plans; create and revise materials; develop and direct full-scale marketing campaigns; build and maintain an online presence, including social media; manage website presence and updates; and coordinate media request as needed. The Marketing and Communications Specialist will also work with University communications staff to develop and carry out divisional communications strategies and projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. 1-3 years of previous marketing and communications experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Develop and implement an annual comprehensive communication plan that includes media outreach, social media content creation, newsletter, and outreach strategies.
  • Export data from communication medians (newsletter, social accounts, etc) and generate monthly communications analytics report. Leverage analytics and reports to determine effectiveness and seek continual improvements of marketing and communication initiatives.
  • Respond to and develop internal and external communication efforts including marketing and project research; planning, developing, and planning communications for programs and projects.
  • Conveying information orally to individuals or groups to ensure understanding of the messages related to programs, projects, and DEI.
  • Develop and deliver promotional and informational materials through a variety of communication media.
  • Work with vendors to design and order promotional materials for UODI programs and initiatives and provide services such as photography.
  • Work with all members of UODI to coordinate publicity and informational events.
  • Writing and editing news and informational materials as well as graphic design and production of materials; preparing and disseminating news releases and feature stories through various media outlets. Ability to edit and analyze informational content prepared by others.
  • Develop and manage print, electronic, broadcast, and/or Web-based content.
  • Manage and maintain UODI marketing and communications portal.

Website and Social Media Management

  • Determines news-worthy stories, website and social media content, and which distribution strategies to implement.
  • Ability to manage basic website changes and updates.
  • Ability to use innovative solutions and/or designs where appropriate.
  • Manage and create engaging content for UODI social media platforms including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Professional Knowledge and Project Management

Possession of a designated level of professional skill and knowledge in the area of DEI and the ability to keep current with developments and trends.
  • Promote a positive image of the university to prospective students, faculty and staff through marketing strategies, and written materials that will highlight university and unit DEI efforts.
  • Develop a strategic approach for UODI communications and the management of complex projects.
  • Ongoing participation in trainings and professional development opportunities related to the role and demonstrate the ability to translate and apply information to daily work.
