Position Summary
n service of the University’s mission, the department works with units to support the development of digital programs and pedagogies, as well as other flexible and/or nontraditional learning experiences. We offer a variety of credit and professional education programs through our unit and also provide support for programs across the University. In support of these programs, we provide strategy, coordination, and services to meet program needs, including but not limited to marketing, recruitment, program/course design and development, conference and event planning and support, and student/participant support. Through our programs and services, Digital and Lifelong Learning extends access to education for participants across the state and beyond and enables campus units to expand, share, and collaborate through support for their own research and educational programs.
The Graphic Designer reports to the Creative Services Manager and collaborates with department’s course development teams to enhance educational materials, as well as with the communications/marketing teams to support broader marketing and branding needs.
This role involves creating visually engaging graphics, illustrations, master templates, and layouts that align with instructional goals and contribute to the organization’s marketing efforts. The Graphic Designer applies design principles to visually convey complex concepts, ensuring seamless integration of visuals into learning content while capturing the organization’s brand essence. Through their expertise, they play a vital role in elevating both learning experiences and the organization’s visual identity.
The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of producing impactful print and digital designs that adhere to branding guidelines and educational requirements. This role requires an in-depth understanding of design principles, typography, and color theory to create visuals that captivate and inform the target audience.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Collaborate with various groups (Creative Services, Instructional Design, Marketing, Conference Services, etc.) and stakeholders to grasp project objectives and requirements.
  • Translate educational concepts into easily comprehensible graphics, such as presentations, infographics, diagrams, illustrations, icons, and animations, that reinforce key concepts using visual cues and course design through collaborations with Subject Matter Experts and Instructional Designers.
  • Conceptualize, design, and produce diverse marketing and communication materials, such as brochures, flyers, posters, social media graphics, website banners, email templates, master PowerPoint templates, infographics, video assets, etc.
  • Ensure all designs are visually appealing, consistent with brand guidelines, and optimized for both print and digital distribution.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, design best practices, and emerging technologies to enhance the quality and effectiveness of DLL’s designs.
  • Transform creative concepts into visually stunning designs that effectively communicate key messages.
  • Present design ideas and concepts to team members and be receptive to feedback for refinement.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently while maintaining the highest level of quality and attention to detail.

This person will follow established UNC and DLL processes, standards, and accessibility guidelines as applicable to the activities stated above.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Digital Design, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Digital Design, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Strong portfolio showcasing a diverse range of design projects and a keen eye for aesthetics and visual storytelling.
  • Strong proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and other relevant design tools.
  • Minimum of 3-4 years of professional experience as a Graphic Designer or Digital Designer, with a portfolio showcasing a diverse range of print and digital design projects.
  • Solid understanding of typography, color theory, layout, and composition.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and conceptually, and to translate ideas into visually impactful designs.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
