Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Utility Plant Operator, under general supervision, safely and efficiently operates the utilities plant, satellite plant, and heating and cooling systems.

Required Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED. Three years of utility plant operation experience or completion of an apprenticeship / assistantship program in utility plant operations.

Preferred Education and Experience

Graduation from an approved apprenticeship program. TAMU utilities plant experience.

Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

Valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. Inability to obtain a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License may result in termination. Subject to yearly Motor Vehicle Record/driver license checks. Completion of TAMU operator training program for Utility Plant Operator, or completion of a single written test representing 25% of the material required to become a Utility Plant Operator within 6 months of employment. Completion of hands-on testing required, to become a Utility Plant Operator within 6 months of employment. Failure to successfully complete any of the Utility Plant Operator testing and/or training program may result in termination.

Other Requirements or Other Factors

Must be able to be on-call, accessible via telephone during non-working hours, and able to report to work within an agreed upon timeframe. Ability to read and comprehend written and oral instructions. Completion of required portion of the Operations Training Program in the designated timeframe. This position will be subject to yearly motor vehicle record checks. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Operates steam boilers, high pressure pumping units, vacuum pumps, chilled water systems, boiler feed pumps, and auxiliary equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation. This may require driving a university vehicle to utility satellite plants. Performs troubleshooting and initial root cause analysis on equipment failures and operational upsets. Knowledgeable in computer control systems. Keeps current on all changes in operating procedures, new equipment and related systems. Monitors equipment and maintains records of equipment operational status.

Assist in observation of switchboard for electrical load changes.

Assists in the operation of water system, water heating systems, heat systems and chilled water systems. Performs chemical analysis and may add chemicals to water used in steam generators, water heating and cooling system and air conditioning system.

Observes and operates controls on cooling tower and water tower.

Performs preventative maintenance and repairs equipment such as small pumps and motors. Cleans and maintains equipment and work areas.

Assists in plant equipment training. Regularly attends safety and training meetings.

Assist with tag-outs/lock-outs of equipment with maintenance personnel.

Are required to climb stairs and ladders and stand for extended periods of time. Occasionally may need to do some heavy lifting of items. May work at times in very warm conditions. Contributes to team by working effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
