Description
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a productive, detail-oriented Utility GIS Professional to join the Utility GIS team. The Utility GIS team is dedicated to creating and maintaining accurate and current GIS data representing assets administered by SPU's water and drainage/wastewater lines-of-business through collaboration with internal customers and stakeholders. Accurate and timely data creation of utility assets in GIS is critical for SPU, other city departments, private developers, and external customers. The Utility GIS Professional performs daily GIS data maintenance in a fast-paced, production driven, team environment. Central to this work is researching and interpreting a variety of source documents such as engineering drawings and specifications, as-built sketches, and other construction-related documents. The successful candidate will work directly with customers and end users to interpret requests and deliver timely data updates. Reads, interprets and verifies from a variety of sources, including, but not limited to: engineering plans (both design and as-built, including schematic details); contractor- and consultant-submitted as-built drawings; engineering specifications; architectural drawings; survey data and associated documents; GIS user-submitted sketches; maps; notes related to field checks; and other official construction-related documents. Updates and maintains a large number of city-shared Utility GIS SDE feature classes and tables using a custom interface utilizing ESRI's ArcGIS software – creates and edits SDE GIS feature classes and tables using the ESRI ArcGIS software suite. Performs quality assurance/quality control – communicates directly with customers and GIS end users; defines and interprets requests; determines general timelines; delivers timely data updates. Maintains unit tracking systems using Microsoft Access or Excel; documents procedures and guidelines; performs user acceptance testing; conducts self-directed research. Coordinates and communicates with team members, supervisor and subject matter experts; and independently resolves most routine problems, while informing team supervisor or lead of unusual problems not covered by procedures and guidelines. Participates in presentations, special projects and assignments as directed. Qualifications Experience: Two (2) years’ experience performing GIS data creation and/or maintenance related to utility infrastructure. Education: Associate degree in Geography, Computer Science, Civil Engineering Technology, or other related field. Education and Experience Equivalency: Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.
