Job Summary:

The University of San Francisco Upward Bound (USFUB) TRIO Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. USFUB is designed to enhance the academic skills of low-income first-generation college-bound high school students in the Oakland and Hayward Unified School District with the goal that participants will pursue postsecondary education. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English, Sciences, Mathematics, and Foreign Language.
The USFUB Program offers a five-week summer academic enrichment program for students entering grade 9th - 12th. Staff orientations will likely take place June 10th – 12th. Instruction for the USFUB Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 17th and continues through Friday, July 19th.

Full Job Description:

The University of San Francisco Upward Bound (USFUB) TRIO Program is currently seeking 5-6 highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced educators to teach academic courses in English, Chemistry or Biology, Algebra/Geometry, Algebra 2, Robotics/Coding, Sign Language, and Self Defense. Courses will be taught to high school students who are rising 9th-12th grades. The positions require someone who has passion, innovation, and knowledge to motivate and challenge students to generate skills necessary for college success. We seek instructors who can develop strong curriculum that addresses students’ needs, interests, abilities, and curiosities in the subject.

Each course will be defined by:

• Small classes (up to 20 students)

• Daily in-class instruction, group work, real-world application of concepts taught, quizzes

• Pre & post assessments

• Instructors are given 12 off-site prep hours for each class taught.

Essential Job Functions:

• Develop a course proposal/set of lesson plans that state goals/objectives, student learning outcomes, methods needed to obtain goals/objectives/outcomes.

• Design and implement a course syllabus that effectively outlines daily concepts covered, in-class & homework assignments, quizzes, group work, projects, pre/post assessment.

• Establish classroom management policies and procedures needed to maintain a productive, engaging classroom environment.

• Demonstrate knowledge of, and support of USFUB mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior

• At the conclusion of the course, the instructor will write a narrative evaluation on each student.

• Participate in USFUB weekly staff meetings.

• Attend instructor orientation/planning sessions and program activities.

• Prepare students for End Summer Open House

Knowledge of:

• Thorough knowledge of subject matter and skill acquisition in subject being taught

• Knowledgeable of California Content standards for subject area (academic courses)

• Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles

Skills/Abilities:

• Skills and knowledge to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,

linguistic and ethnic backgrounds

• Ability to understand and enforce all USFUB Program policies

Education and Training:

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Preferred candidate holds Teaching Credential or working towards Teaching Credential.

• Minimum 2 years experience teaching in related subject.

• Minimum 2 years direct working relationship/or teaching low-income, first-generation college-bound students.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands:

• Requires passing fingerprinting and a background check.

• Requires certificate of completion of Mandated Reporting Training and USF trainings related to working with minors.
