Upward Bound Summer Instructor

Position Overview

Position Summary: 

Under the general supervision of the Director and Coordinator of Upward Bound, provide instruction and support for the Upward Bound summer program and students. Instructors will be paid on a per class basis not to exceed .25 FTE.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare lesson plans and educate students on the following subjects:
(Mathematics, Science, and English lesson plans must meet NMPED Standards)  
  • Mathematics Instructors: Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry/Trig., Algebra II, Pre-Calculus/Calc. or ACT/SAT Preparation
  • Science Instructors:  Laboratory Science-Biology, Chemistry, Engineering & Physics, Anatomy, etc.
  • Foreign Language Instructors: Beginning and Advanced Spanish, French, Sign Language, Chinese or other language
    • Monitor and record student performance on a weekly basis
    • Must maintain student records and files in a secure and confidential manner
    • Instruct using evidence-based and interactive teaching techniques
    • Provide appropriate classroom management for 9th – 12th grade high school students
    • Provide Tutoring session for students at least one time per week
    • Provide a list of supplies to the Upward Bound Director by April 19, 2024.
    • Provide weekly lesson plans that meet NM PED Standards to Upward Bound Director no later than one week prior to course instruction.
    • Instructor may be required to be a chaperone during the summer trip during the final week of the program. 
    • Participate in organized recreational activities with students
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
    • Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as commitment to excellence in teaching students of diverse backgrounds.  Ability to work without constant supervision and ability to motivate students. Knowledge of virtual platforms such as Google Classroom and Zoom..
    Minimum Job Requirements: 
    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in subject being taught or accomplished in the elective area required.
    • Submission of course syllabus on or before May 15, 2024 required by selected instructor.   
    • Preference given to Licensed teachers or college faculty 
    • Fluency in Spanish preferred  
    • Required to attend mandatory staff orientation that will occur the week of May 27, all pre-program preparation meetings, and weekly meetings during the summer program, as well as Parent/Student banquet.   Summer course instruction will run from May 30 through July 5, 2024.

    • Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
