JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Upward Bound Programs (UBP), which includes Upward Bound (UB), Upward Bound Migrant (UBM), and Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) is seeking 2 talented and motivated summer Residential Medical Managers who are interested in working with high school students from June 10 through July 26, 2024.

The 2024 Summer Academy hosts approximately 100 students from six high schools at the University Park campus during a six-week residential camp and offers a taste of college life as well as assistance with academic courses. Students and staff participate in educational, cultural, and recreational activities throughout the summer.

Medical Managers will work with the Administrative Staff and Residential Mentors from Upward Bound Programs (UBP) to ensure the well-being and safety of all students and other staff members. The Medical Managers will also serve generally as a role model who exhibits sound judgment, maturity, and common sense; enforce UBP and University regulations in a consistent and objective manner; attend and chaperone groups of students as they participate in activities both on and off campus; monitor students; attend staff meetings when necessary; complete program documentation and evaluations by established deadlines; and perform sick duty as scheduled.

More specific job responsibilities may include: monitoring and assisting in maintaining health and safety practices; working with other staff to minimize/eliminate health and safety risks; witnessing the self-administration of medications; collecting students’ medications; completing daily medication logs; making appointments with University Health Services (UHS) for students who are ill and need to be seen; escorting ill students to and from UHS and assisting staff with contacting parents; monitoring students after receiving care at University Health Services and/or Mt. Nittany Medical Center; distributing meals in take-out containers during scheduled meals for students who are sick in their residence hall; preparing adequate water, sunscreen, first aid kit and other prevention materials for field trips and outdoor activities; and accompanying Administrative Staff off-site for ER/Med Express clinic visits with ill students after UHS is closed.

The position requires daytime and evening responsibilities. Medical Managers will work either a 7 AM – 3 PM shift or a 3 – 11 PM shift alternating throughout the summer. There may also be a few virtual components of the Summer Academy held around the Juneteenth and Fourth of July holidays which Medical Managers are expected to attend. Both Medical Managers are required to stay in the student residence hall while students are on campus. Upward Bound Programs’ full-time staff members will be their direct supervisors. The salary, not including room and board, will be $4,200.

Successful candidates will have earned a minimum of 30 credits by the beginning of June 2024 and either be a current Penn State student, UBP alumni, or currently enrolled at another institution. Preferred candidates will be pursuing a nursing/medical major and have some experience working with youth in a residential setting. Candidates cannot schedule classes or hold additional employment while employed by UBP. Housing and meals will be provided from June 10 – July 26 at no charge. There will be some virtual training scheduled prior to these dates and some time off during weekends and on the Juneteenth and Fourth of July holidays.
