Description
The Environmental Institute of Houston (EIH) at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) is conducting a statewide population assessment of Alligator Snapping Turtles (Macrochelys temminckii) under contract with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts to provide data for direct use by resource managers in future population management. We are currently recruiting one full-time field Crew Leader to assist with sampling. All work will be based out of Houston, but extensive travel is required to conduct field work throughout east Texas. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable field experience collecting genetic samples, conducting aquatic turtle field surveys, and analyzing data related to conservation and wildlife management. This position is grant funded and continuation is contingent upon future funding. Qualifications
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in wildlife management, biology, environmental science, ecology, or a closely related field. Applicants must be willing to travel, but must have lodging in the Houston area for office-based activities. Additionally, a successful candidate will possess: Required - Knowledge necessary to operate common fisheries, wildlife, and aquatic biological field gear according to technical standard operating procedures (SOPs) - Knowledge necessary to operate, calibrate, and maintain field and laboratory instruments according to manufacturer’s specifications and SOP(s) - Ability to travel up to 14 days at a time and work long hours (10+) in the field during all seasons - Good physical condition (able to lift and carry 50+ lbs.) and positive attitude - Previous field experience in biology, ecology, wildlife management, or a closely related topic Preferred - Field-based, thesis driven Master's degree in a field described above - Experience in herpetological surveys and driving/trailering small vessels (up to 25 ft.) - Experience with field sampling techniques including: hoop trapping, freshwater fish and turtle identification, east Texas tree identification Additional Notes: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, be physically able to drive university vehicles, and must pass a criminal background and motor vehicle background check prior to hiring. This is a full time, temporary, grant-funded position.
