Description
Trains, supervises and assists technical staff and students of faculty in the chemical analysis of their plant, soil, water, animal, or environmental samples using the laboratory equipment. Is responsible for organization and safety of the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory. Runs samples as needed. Maintains laboratory equipment such as atomic absorption spectrophotometer, UV spectrometer, GC-Mass spectrometer computers, autoanalyzers, ICP-OES, LECO C/N Analyzer, digestors, ovens and other equipment in the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, making sure that they are always operable. Is responsible for seeing that malfunctioning equipment is repaired promptly and that service contracts are maintained, where applicable. Monitors deionized water systems. Is responsible for organization and safety of the multi-user chemical storage areas, such as solvent storage area, dry chemical storage area, pesticide storage areas, and chemical waste storage area. Monitors and helps faculty maintain alcohol, chemical and pesticide inventories. Tracks number of samples processed in the Chemistry Lab as well as charges for samples (budget). Works with UF Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Department to manage disposal of chemical and other wastes generated on site in a timely manner. Works with UF EH&S on other chemical safety issues as needed. Reviews pertinent literature and keeps abreast of new developments in instrumentation and analytical techniques as applicable to the types of analysis performed in the Analytical Chemistry Lab. Develops and recommends modified analytical procedures to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of laboratory analyses.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field and minimum of one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field and minimum of three years of relevant experience. Doctoral degree in chemistry or a closely related field is preferred.
